The 14-year old Lynn Babe Ruth All-Star baseball team won the District 1 title Monday night with a dominant 18-5 win over Peabody in five innings. With the win, the Lynn 14’s have earned a spot in the state tournament that begins July 6.
“It feels great to win the district, these kids have worked hard,” said manager Brian O’Connor. “It’s their second year on the new diamond, so they’ve been practicing really well and everything translated to the games. We added a new coach in Jay Fraher who has helped tremendously as well. It was a great team win.”
Anthony Mateo led the way for the Lynn 14’s, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and five RBI. Jason Donahue went 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Aiven Cabral, Aaron O’Connor, Anthony Marino and Christian Moran each scored three runs. Moran also got the win on the mound after getting the start and pitching 2 2/3 innings. Ryan Fraher pitched the final 2 1/3 innings of relief and didn’t give up a single hit.
The Lynn 14’s will now wait for the state tournament seeding to come out to find out who its first opponent will be.
Also on Monday night, the Lynn 15-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars defeated Revere, 12-0, in a mercy-rule shortened game.
The 13’s, already 2-0 in pool play, host Somerville Tuesday evening (5:45) at Clancy in Lynn. The 13’s have outscored their two opponents 28-0 in pool play thus far and are ranked as the No. 1 seed in Eastern Mass.
