Police identify man who drowned in a Breakheart Reservation lake

July 5, 2018 by Gayla Cawley

SAUGUS — The 20-year-old man who drowned in Silver Lake at Breakheart Reservation on Wednesday evening has been identified as Uwaldo Erazo.

Erazo was from Honduras, but had been living with a cousin in Lynn at the time of his death, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s office.

Authorities said Erazo had attempted to swim to an island in the lake with two of his cousins, but about halfway there, he struggled and went under. The cousins had attempted to find him, but were unsuccessful.

He was found after a more than hour-long search and pulled out of the water by three Saugus firefighters. Someone had seen a man floating and then reported seeing him go under, officials said.

Erazo was taken to Melrose Wakefield Hospital where he later died.

Saugus Fire Chief Michael Newbury said Silver Lake, which is about a half-mile walk into the reservation, is a “no swimming” zone with no lifeguards and no beach, unlike the main lake where people can swim under supervision.
