Saugus man charged in deadly car crash

July 16, 2018 by Bridget Turcotte

SAUGUS — A Saugus man is expected to be arraigned on motor vehicle homicide charges Tuesday in connection with a July 8 fatal crash in Malden.

Renan DaSilva, 32, has also been charged with operating under the influence causing serious bodily injury, operating under the influence, negligent operation, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, uninsured operation of a motor vehicle, and operating a vehicle with a revoked registration.

DaSilva was allegedly involved in a head-on collision on Lynn Street in Malden between a 2009 Infiniti FX35 and a 2008 Nissan Altima, according to a statement from Middlesex County District Attorney Marian T. Ryan. Jakeuderm Bernadin, 23, of Somerville, was pronounced dead at the scene. Bernadin was reportedly a passenger in the Altima.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the driver of the Infinity was heading north at a high rate of speed when he crossed the double line, striking a Nissan with two occupants that was traveling south, according to the DA’s office.

DaSilva, who was driving the infinity, remained on scene and was transported to an area hospital. The driver of the Altima, a 27-year-old man, was also transported to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

DaSilva remains hospitalized as a result of the crash. The location of his arraignment will be dependent on his condition Tuesday morning.

The crash remains under investigation by Ryan’s office, the Malden Police Department, and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
