Saugus man who skipped bail now held without bail

LYNN — A Saugus man who failed to appear for arraignment in Lynn District Court Tuesday, after the alleged indecent assault of a woman in Saugus over the weekend, was held without bail Thursday.

Timothy L. Gillespie appeared for his arraignment two days after he was scheduled to appear. He was held pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Sept. 11, said Essex County District Attorney spokeswoman Carrie Kimball-Monahan.

Gillespie was arrested by Saugus Police Saturday night and charged with one count of indecent assault and battery on a person age 14 or over, according to a statement from Interim Chief Ronald Giorgetti.

Gillespie was arrested after police were dispatched to the area of Jasper and Central streets at 6 p.m. Saturday. Police didn’t release any other details.

“Massachusetts law prohibits the Saugus Police Department from releasing any further details about this incident or investigation,” said the statement from Giorgetti.

A clerk released Gillespie on bail over the weekend, and ordered him to return to Lynn District Court for arraignment at 9 a.m. Tuesday. He failed to appear, said Kimball-Monahan.

“When someone is arrested over the weekend or at nighttime when court is not in session, a clerk comes in and makes a decision whether to hold a person or to set a bail amount,” said Kimball-Monahan. “In this case a clerk set a bail amount.”

Kimball-Monahan didn’t immediately know the bail amount.

A default warrant was issued for Gillespie’s arrest when he failed to appear. He was arrested by Saugus Police.
