Lynn to host the 7th North Shore Veterans Appreciation Parade

September 13, 2018 by Gayla Cawley

LYNN — There will be a number of parking restrictions and road closures on Sunday when the city will host the seventh North Shore Veterans Appreciation Parade.

The parade, meant to remind veterans they’re not only appreciated on traditional military holidays, will kick off at 1 p.m.

The route goes from Federal Street down Western Avenue, turning right onto Chestnut Street, turning left onto Goodridge Street and ending at Lynn English High School, where there will be a flag-raising ceremony.

There will be a tent and reception area for Gold Star families at a review stand, which will be located in front of Lucia Lighting & Design on Western Avenue.

Marchers will be separated into 13 waves, or sections. The first wave will include police, fire, and Navy color guards, Grand Marshals and the Waltham American Legion Band.

The North Shore Veterans Appreciation Committee had to fundraise $70,000 over two years to put on the parade. The event was last held in 2015 in Saugus, and Lynn last hosted it in 2013. This year’s event will be the farewell parade for the current members of the committee, which was formed 12 years ago.

“It’s going to be a fantastic tribute to all the veterans, all the men and women who have served our country,” said David Solimine Sr., a member of the committee. “The whole community has come together to help sponsor this.”

For the parade, there will be no parking on both sides of the following streets from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Violators will be towed.

  • Centre Street, from Marion Street to Market Square
  • Western Avenue, from Federal Street to Clovelly Street
  • Chestnut Street, from Allen Avenue to Maple Street
  • Goodridge Street, from Chestnut Street to Tracy Avenue
  • Memorial Park Avenue, from Goodridge Street to dead end
  • Tracy Avenue, Lynn English High School driveway — 30 feet each way — both sides

Once roads along the parade route are closed, residents and motorists should expect them to remain closed until 4 p.m. Road closures near Lynn English High School along Goodridge Street and Memorial Park will be in effect until 5 p.m. Motorists are urged to plan accordingly and seek alternate routes.

The following roads will be closed:

Beginning at 10:30 a.m.:

  • Centre Street
  • Marion Street, from Federal Street to Boston Street
  • Access Road, from Federal Street to Centre Street

Beginning at 12 p.m.:

  • Western Avenue, from Federal Street to Chatham Street
  • Maple Street, from Ford Street to Western Avenue
  • Chestnut Street, from Maple Street to Allen Avenue
  • Memorial Park Avenue, from Goodridge Street to dead end
  • Goodridge Street, from Chestnut Street to Tracy Avenue

Residents should be aware that all roads accessing Western Avenue from Federal Street to Chatham Street will be restricted. Motor vehicles will not be allowed to access the parade route beginning at 12 p.m.

Residents living on one-way streets, or dead-end streets, that require access to Western Avenue for egress should plan accordingly. Once the road closures are initiated, no motor vehicles will be allowed on the designated streets for several hours or more.
