The St. Mary’s boys soccer team started slow out of the gate this season but Wednesday’s 2-0 shutout win over Catholic Central League rival Austin Prep is a sign that the Spartans are on the upswing.
After a scoreless half, Thiago DeOliveira scored the game’s first goal from 25 yards out with an assist from Kevin Perez. Perez then dished another assist, this time to junior Matt Gallego, who scored his first career varsity goal to seal St. Mary’s 2-0 win.
“Matt definitely was very excited,” Spartans coach Mike D’Agostino said. “He was very happy. He worked very hard in front of the net and I’m excited for him.”
Nick Pappas recorded his second shutout of the season with four saves.
“Our defense played well. Connor Mackey, Aiden O’Brien and Richie LeBrun, the three of them played amazing,” D’Agostino said.
St. Mary’s (3-1-1) visits Malden Catholic Friday afternoon (4).
