LYNN — With friends like this, who needs enemies?
A 24-year-old man told police his “friend” attacked him with a broomstick after he refused to hand over his phone, Lynn Police Lt. Michael Kmiec said.
It wasn’t clear whether the “friend,” identified by police as Amilcar Lopez-Chilel, 22, of Lynn, was asking to use the phone or attempting to rob the victim.
But when the victim refused to give him the phone, Lopez-Chilel hit him in the head and arm with a broomstick, leaving him with a laceration on the top of his forehead and an injury to his arm, Kmiec said.
The victim was treated at Salem Hospital for his injuries.
Officers on patrol encountered the altercation in the area of 757 Western Ave. shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday and found the bleeding victim and saw Lopez-Chilel holding a broomstick, Kmiec said.
Lopez-Chilel fled after seeing police, but officers were able to take him into custody after he ran under the Market Basket loading docks, Kmiec said.
Lopez-Chilel was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, armed robbery and disorderly conduct.
