SAUGUS — Residents can dispose of their household hazardous waste in an environmentally responsible manner during a free collection event on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon at Saugus High School.

Common household hazardous waste products include rubber cement, airplane glue, fiberglass resins, aerosol cans, photo chemicals, furniture polish, floor and metal polish, oven cleaner, hobby and artist supplies, turpentine, and chemistry sets.

Accepted vehicle waste includes fuel gasoline, kerosene, engine degreaser, brake fluid, carburetor cleaner, transmission fluid, car wax, polishes, driveway sealer, car batteries, antifreeze, cesspool cleaners, roofing tar, swimming pool chemicals, motor oil, and car batteries.

Yard waste including weed killer, chemical fertilizers, flea control products, moth balls, poisons, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides.

Accepted workbench waste includes oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, wood preservatives, paint strippers or thinners, solvent adhesives and lighter fluid.

Residents are reminded to be cautious when transporting household hazardous materials. Keep the materials in their original containers, tighten caps and lids, sort and package products separately and package containers in sturdy, upright boxes, padded with newspaper. Chemicals should never be mixed and residents should not smoke while handling hazardous materials.

Commercial waste will not be accepted.

Residents are limited to two car loads, or 50 pounds or gallons of hazardous waste.

Empty containers, trash, latex paint, radioactive waste, smoke detectors, infections and biological wastes, ammunition, fireworks, explosives, fire extinguishers, and syringes will not be accepted.

TVs, computers, and car tires can be recycled at the drop-off center at 515 Main St. on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Propane tanks up to 20 pounds may be disposed of for $5.

Contact Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator Lorna Cerbone at 781-231-4036 with questions. To avoid waiting, residents are encourage to register by contacting Cerbone or by visiting the department on the lower level of Town Hall. Proof of residency is required.
