North Shore police departments will participate in National Take Back Day on Saturday to help residents dispose of old, expired and unused medications.

Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Oct. 27, Lynn, Swampscott, Saugus, Peabody, and Lynnfield police departments are holding drop off locations for the national initiative. The goal is to help residents dispose of potentially dangerous, controlled substances.

This is the 16th year the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has held National Take Back Day, according to a press release from the Swampscott Police Department. The town’s drop off location is their police department at 531 Humphrey St. and they will not accept syringes, needles, or liquid medications.

According to a press release from the Lynn Police Department, they selected CVS Pharmacy, 50 Boston St., as their drop off location for Saturday’s event. Items to be collected include prescription and over the counter medication, vitamins, veterinary medications, narcotics, and liquid medications. They ask residents to not put any needles in the collection box.

Saugus Police Department will have a drop box at their station near the Roundhill Street side of the building, according to the DEA’s website. Peabody and Lynnfield police departments have also joined in on the national initiative, placing collection boxes in the lobbies of each of their stations for Saturday.

Outside of the one day initiative, Swampscott Police stated the prescription drop box is permanently placed in their lobby and is accessible at anytime. Nahant and Marblehead police departments also have drop off boxes available 24/7 at their stations.
