LYNN — It felt a lot like Christmas as Santa and Mrs. Claus joined in on caroling during the city’s annual tree lighting Tuesday night.
Residents and city officials braved the cold to partake in Lynn’s holiday tradition. Students from Lynn English and Lynn Classical serenaded the small crowd with classic Christmas carols, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived on a vintage, lit-up John’s Oil Truck, and everyone cheered as the common’s massive Christmas tree debuted its lights.
“It’s cold but this is definitely in season,” said Mayor Thomas M. McGee to the crowd. “I want to welcome you all and bring greetings to the city. I also want to thank members of the DPW for really doing a lot in this cold weather to make sure our city is ready for the holidays.”
Jorge Ibanez conducted Lynn English’s chorus and concert choir while Kathleen Dunn did the same for Lynn Classical’s concert choir. Residents echoed their words as they followed along to the lyrics of each of the Christmas carols. The Claus’ arrived just in time to countdown the launch of the tree lighting.
Superintendent Dr. Patrick Tutwiler was in awe after his first official tree lighting in his new position.
“My heart is full,” he said. “Look at all these people who braved the cold to come together tonight. I mean, that is what the holidays are all about.”
