LYNNFIELD — Students will return to Lynnfield High School on Tuesday, one day after a gas leak was detected in a ventilation unit, according to Superintendent Jane Tremblay.
In an email to parents Monday afternoon, the superintendent said the Lynnfield Fire Department confirmed that the leak in the heating ventilation and air conditioning unit on the roof was isolated and fixed.
“It is important to know that there were never hazardous levels of gas in Lynnfield High School,” she wrote. “We have been assured by National Grid and The Lynnfield Fire Department that the building is safe for all for school tomorrow.”
Early Monday, students and faculty were sent home, shortly after 8 a.m., after staff discovered a smell that couldn’t be identified.
The fire and police departments and National Grid were contacted. Students were moved from their first period classes to the gymnasium at the other end of the building far from the ventilation system, and then sent home.
The emergency responders identified the odor as a gas leak in one of the ventilation units atop the building near the cafeteria at the other end of the school.
“We were told there were no levels of hazardous gas in the building,” Tremblay said. “But as a precaution, we evacuated the building for the day.”
