After a tough start to the season, the Lynn Jets have found their footing. Lynn defeated Essex Tech, 6-5, in the championship game of its annual Christmas Tournament at William P. Connery Rink Thursday.
Andrew Patrie led the Jets with three goals and one assist. John DiFilippo scored two goals with three assists, Brian Clougherty scored once and dished three assists. Owen Downey logged one assist.
Goalie Jack Gallant made 20 saves.
“The word for the past two days for us is resilient,” Lynn coach Mike Roberts said. “We were down 3-1 going into the second, 4-2 going into the third. These kids keep on battling. Our first line was unbelievable. Physically, they started to take over in the third period. They kept plugging, didn’t give up. Eventually John scored the game-winner. Andrew, I can’t say enough about him. Jack was a little shaky to start but he shook it off. He made some key saves in the third period to keep us in it.”
Lynn (2-1-1) visits Winthrop Saturday (1:30).
Marblehead 8, Gloucester 3
The Magicians remain undefeated (6-0) and claimed the Cape Ann Savings Bank Tournament championship.
Goal scorers were Jacob Garfield (four), Will Shull (two), Zach Piersol (one) and Eli Feingold (one). Shull was named the tournament’s MVP. Marblehead hosts Beverly next Wednesday (6:30) at Salem State.
Melrose 4, Saugus 1
The Sachems fell short in the championship game of the Kasabuski Christmas Classic. Saugus (1-2-2) hosts Haverhill Monday (12).
Boston Latin 2, Lynnfield 1
The Pioneers fell short in the championship game of the Boston Latin School Christmas Tournament. Lynnfield (3-2-1) visits Peabody Saturday (12).
BC High 2, St. John’s 1 (OT)
Evan Moore scored the lone goal for St. John’s in the opening round of the Pete Frates Classic at Essex Sports Center. St. John’s (2-1-1) takes on Central Catholic in the consolation game Friday (3:10).
GIRLS HOCKEY
Winthrop 5, Falmouth (ME) 1
Scoring goals for the Vikings were Kaiya Rodrigues (two), Julia Holmes (one, first varsity goal), Emma Carleton (one goal, one assist) and Olivia Driscoll (one). Mia Martucci dished two assists.
Goalies Summer Tallent (11 saves) and Hayley McSwiney (two saves) paired up for the win.
“It was a tough battle,” Winthrop coach Anthony Martucci said. “Falmouth has a good team. They play physical and they’re strong. Their goalie was excellent and made a bunch of big saves.”
Winthrop visits Peabody Saturday (4).
Fenwick 3, Archbishop Williams 0
At Warrior Ice Arena, the Crusaders won the St. Joseph’s Prep Christmas Tournament for the second year in a row.
Gabby Davern scored two goals and Lexi McNeil scored one. McNeil, Jill Mattucci, Grace Morey and Lauren Dirarian each logged one assist.
Goalie Daphne Jalbert made 14 saves for the shutout win.
Fenwick (6-1) hosts Westford Academy Sunday morning (9).
“We blocked a lot of shots,” Fenwick coach Doug Anderson said. “We did a great job on the defensive end after we got the lead. We’re excited. We’ve had a great December with one more to go Sunday morning.”
BOYS BASKETBALL
Gloucester 67, Saugus 59
Joe Lusso led Saugus with 19 points. Christian Correia scored 18 points and Mason Nickolas added 16 points.
Saugus (0-5) hosts Revere next Friday.
“I thought we played well,” Saugus coach Mark Bertrand said. “We have to put together 32 good minutes of basketball. I’ve seen improvement but we need a little bit more.”
St. John’s 76, Londonderry (N.H.) 50
At North Andover in the opening round of the Commonwealth Christmas Tournament, Will Batchelder paced the Eagles with 20 points. The Eagles featured 10 different scorers.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Fenwick 55, Beverly 46
Sammi Gallant’s 20 points powered Fenwick to a non-conference win in the opening round of the Masconomet Holiday Tournament. Liv DiPietro added 11 points, Liz Gonzalez scored nine points with 10 rebounds and Elizabeth Pica grabbed nine rebounds. Fenwick improved to 3-2 this season.
SWIMMING
Peabody 95, Gloucester 85
First-place finishers for the Tanners were Roman Bukhovko (200 individual medley), Anthony Minichillo (50 free), Isabella Forte (diving), William Connolly (100 butterfly; 100 breaststroke).
The 200 yard medley relay team of Bukhovko, Minichillo, Connolly and Lily Bromberger also finished in first place.
“We knew going into this meet that Gloucester was a very strong team. They put up a good fight, and I am very proud of the hard work our Tanners put into the pool tonight,” said coach Maureen Shea.
