Saugus Police identified the man who died in a fatal car crash Sunday afternoon.

Steven Rauseo, 74, was seriously injured when his vehicle crashed through a garage at a home on Hammersmith Drive, fell off a cliff, and tumbled down a 40-foot embankment, according to a press release from Interim Chief Ronald Giorgetti. Rauseo was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Saugus Police and Fire responded to the crash at about 1:30 p.m. and found the car on its roof. Rauseo, the only person in the car, had to be extricated by Saugus Fire crews.

The initial investigation indicates that the incident was accidental, said Giorgetti. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Saugus Police Department, with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
