NAHANT — A child was approached by an unknown man while walking home from the Johnson Elementary School Thursday afternoon, according to Nahant Police.
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Castle Road, according to a statement from police.
As the student was walking home from school, she and the man passed each other while in the street, according to the statement. The man reportedly asked if the child wanted a ride to Lynn. According to police, the student declined and continued home and the man continued in the opposite direction.
The male was described as a white male in his 30s or 40s, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, and slightly overweight for his height. The male was wearing sneakers, jeans, a black or dark brown coat, and a black hat.
There was no physical harm to the student, nor any enticement or coercion by the male, according to police.
Due to a delay in the reporting of the incident, officers were not able to immediately check the area.
“At this time, we are confident this was not an attempted abduction or kidnapping, rather an unsettling and concerning miscommunication,” Nahant Police said in the statement. “We also do not have any reason to believe the public is at risk as it relates to this incident. The Nahant Police are actively investigating the incident in conjunction with Johnson School administration. We will continue to be present at school drop off and pick up. As always, we encourage reporting incidents or suspicious activity as soon as possible.”
