Roundup: Marblehead hockey punches ticket to tournament

The Marblehead boys hockey team punched its ticket to the state tournament with a 5-2 win over Northeastern Conference rival Beverly Saturday at Raymond Bourque Arena at Endicott College.

Beverly led 1-0 halfway through the first period and trailed 3-2 heading into the third period before the Magicians put the game away with two unanswered goals.

Eli Feingold scored two goals for the Magicians. Jacob Garfield, Zach Piersol and Will Shull scored a goal each. Magicians goalie Peter Santeusanio made 16 saves.

Andrew Mezzak and Connor Hanlon scored a goal each for the Panthers.

Marblehead (10-2-1) hosts Winthrop Wednesday night (7:30).

BOYS HOCKEY
Lynn 8, Everett 4
At William P. Connery Rink, Lynn scored six goals in the second period to come away with the win and improved to 8-3-2. The Jets are two points away from qualifying for the state tournament.

John DiFilippo scored three goals to lead the offense. Andrew Patrie continued his solid stretch of play with two goals. Paul Papageorgiou, Aidan Seitz and Cameron Hunt each scored once.
Lynn’s back on the ice Wednesday (4) when it hosts Hamilton-Wenham.
Swampscott 4, Somerville 2
At Richard Rockett Arena, the Big Blue featured four different goal scorers in the winning effort. Drew Olivieri tied the game at 1-1 with assists from Conor Donovan and Zach Elwell. Donovan, Elwell and Jake Sweeney (first career varsity goal) followed suit with a goal each. Olivieri and Elwell dished two assists. Donovan and Chris Henriques logged one assist each.
The Big Blue (5-6-3) host Everett Saturday (2:30).
Winthrop 2, Medford 1
At Lawrence Larsen Rink, the Vikings improved to 11-3 with the win. Joe Deeb and Sam Yarrow each scored a goal. Yarrow, Brian Chalmers and Chris Finn dished assists. Goalie Ryan Skoczylas made 26 saves. Winthrop has a tough test ahead Wednesday night (7:30) at Marblehead.  
Gloucester 7, Revere 3
The Patriots fell to 2-10-2 on the season. They host Essex Tech Wednesday night (6:30) in a non-conference tilt.
Austin Prep 5, Fenwick 0
The offensive woes continued for the Crusaders Saturday night at Stoneham Arena. Fenwick fell to 4-7-1 and visits Groton-Dunstable Wednesday night (7).

BOYS BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s 66, Mt. Pleasant (RI) 52

The Spartans remain undefeated at 15-0. Joey Abate-Walsh led St. Mary’s in scoring with 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Ademide Badmus just missed a double-double at 12 points and eight rebounds. Sammy Batiste scored 11 points.

The Spartans are back in action Tuesday (5:30) when they travel to New Bedford.

Mansfield 74, English 64

The Bulldogs suffered their first loss since the championship game of the Boverini Tournament. Jarnel Guzman scored 22 points and Justin Fitzpatrick added 13. English travels to Revere Wednesday night (7).

Melrose 66, Lynnfield 59

Despite the loss, the Pioneers (6-8) delivered one of their most complete all-around efforts Sunday. Junior captain Clay Marengi led the Pioneers with 17 points and also hauled down nine rebounds. Sophomore Jack Ford (3 rebounds, 3 steals) scored 11 points, while senior captain Jackson Cleary (5 rebounds) was also in double figures with 10 points.

Junior Tony Hunt had eight points, seven rebounds and a steal; and junior Max Boustris had six rebounds, four points, three steals and a blocked shot.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Peabody/Lynnfield 7, Oakmont 0

The Peabody/Lynnfield girls hockey team scored early and often Saturday afternoon to improve to 9-3-1. With the win, the Tanners can clinch a spot in the tournament Wednesday with a tie or win against Waltham at home. Freshman Jenna Mack notched her first varsity point with a second-period assist. Sophomore Jenn Flynn had a big day with a goal and two assists, while freshman Maria Pierce also had three points on two goals and one assist. Junior captain Sammie Mirasolo (2 goals), senior captain Jess Robert (goal, assist) and senior captain Kat DiGiulio (goal, assist) had two points each. Freshman Sadie Geran, junior Carolyn Garofoli and freshman Catherine Sweeney chipped in one assist each.

Medford 5, Marblehead 2

Sydney Cresta and Mia Salah each scored a goal for the Magicians. Marblehead (2-9) visits Fenwick Wednesday (6:30) at Essex Sports Center.

WRESTLING

Marblehead-Swampscott finished seven out of 13 in the Northeastern Conference-Cape Ann League meet. Six wrestlers placed, with Michael Hopkins winning in the 138-pound category.

Others placing were: 106, Connor O’Brien, third;  113, Jorge Maldonado, third; 145, Nick Sirota, third; 152, Erik Bazarov, fourth; 160, Caden Dubiel, fourth.

Marblehead-Swampscott hosts Triton Wednesday (6:15, at Swampscott).
