The Lynn Jets shipped up to Boston Wednesday and came away with a 4-1 win over Latin Academy at Northeastern University’s Matthews Arena.
Lynn scored twice in the final minute of the second period after Latin Academy tied the game at 1-1.
“It was a good, physical game from our part,” Lynn coach Mike Roberts said. “We stayed out of the penalty box and cashed in on opportunities late to make it 3-1. Latin Academy played hard and their goalie (Andrew Sahatjian) was superb.”
Goals were scored by Andrew Patrie (two), John DiFilippo and Matt Devin. Assists were logged by Brian Clougherty (three), Patrie (two), Christian Alquinta, Owen Downey and Paul Papageorgiou. Clougherty surpassed the 150-point mark for his career and DiFilippo notched 50 points for the season.
Latin Academy’s lone goal was scored by Joe Loewen with assists from James Dillon and Brendan Butler.
The Jets (10-3-3) visit Shawsheen Thursday (7:10).
St. Mary’s 5, Archbishop Williams 2
Nick Napolitano’s hat trick led St. Mary’s to a Catholic Central League win. Kory Ouellette and Davis Kinne each scored once. Damon Maribito, Colin Reddy, Bryce Bedard and Owen Maguire each logged on assist. Spartans goalie Joe Purtell made 21 saves.
St. Mary’s (14-3) visits Austin Prep Saturday (8). The winner will earn the CCL title.
“We had a lot of improvement on our discipline,” Spartans coach Mark Lee said. “We had one penalty tonight. We had a lot of energy to give us an opportunity to play for a CCL championship Saturday against Austin Prep.
“Im very happy with the discipline we showed and the energy we played with. With only a few games left these games are very important.
Danvers 5, Saugus 1
At Ray Bourque Arena, Joe Cross scored the lone goal for Saugus on Ronnie Paolo’s assist. The Sachems (6-7-4) host Cambridge Saturday (4:30). Saugus needs four points in its final three games to qualify for the state tournament.
Marblehead 3, Haverhill 2
Jacob Garfield led the way with two goals and one assist as the Magicians earned another road win. Charlie McGurrin scored one goal, while Paul Heffernan, Will Shull and Collin Hart each had one assist.
Marblehead (11-3-3) hosts Peabody Monday night.
St. John’s Prep 5, Mt. St. Charles (R.I.) 3
Ryan Bradley and Zach McKenelly had goals in the win for the Eagles, while Matt Taylor had one assist. St. John’s (6-6-3) plays against St. John’s (Shrewsbury) Saturday.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Austin Prep 3, St. Mary’s 0
The Cougars sweep their season series with St. Mary’s in a battle between Catholic Central League foes. Austin Prep broke a scoreless tie with three goals in the final period.
Spartans coach Frank Pagliuca said goalie Lauren Vaccaro, Jenny Purtell and Makayla McGrath all played well.
“Austin Prep’s the top team in the state,” Pagliuca said. “I thought we competed really hard for two and a half periods. If we can build off this effort with the energy we played with tonight, I think we’re going to be in good shape for the remaining five games and heading into the tournament.”
St. Mary’s (11-2-2) visits Arlington Catholic Saturday (6).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Malden Catholic 58, Swampscott 53
The Big Blue fought back valiantly after falling behind 21-6 in the first quarter, but their rally came up just short.
Max Pegnato led the way with 18 points and six rebounds in the loss, while Jackson Byrne had 12 points and five assists.
Swampscott (7-9) hosts Saugus Friday (7).
Spellman 62, Fenwick 40
The Crusaders dropped to 9-6 on the season with the loss at Salem High. Fenwick takes on Archbishop Williams Sunday (1:30) at Salem High.
Malden 93, Saugus 47
The Sachems fell to Malden in a Northeastern Conference tilt Tuesday night. Christian Correia led Saugus scorers with 17 points. Joe Lusso finished with nine points.
“I give Malden credit,” Saugus coach Mark Bertrand said. “They hit their shots.”
The Sachems visit Swampscott Friday (7).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Saugus 38, Fontbonne 36
At Saugus, Kiley Ronan scored 11 points and led the defensive effort. Alessia Salzillo (six points), Marissa Stockwell (six), Taylor Bogdanski (five) and Molly Granara (five) also contributed.
“It was a low scoring game,” Sachems coach Mark Schruender said. “Every point mattered. Our bench played great, our energy was great. They beat us by 12 earlier in the season. The players worked really hard and they brought it tonight.”
