Letter to the editor: Make clergy mandated reporters

the-editors

March 1, 2019 by the-editors

“Priests are human beings … Go anywhere and you will find the very same types of things happening … I never felt it was my place to judge.” (The Item, Feb. 28).

Wow. Reminds me of when I would say to my mother, “The other kids do it. Susan’s mother lets her…,” and, of course, her response: “If Susan jumped off a bridge …”

The Catholic Church is wasting their time planning how they will train bishops to investigate abuse (and who will investigate the bishops?). There is a simple solution.

Pick up the phone and call the police, the local district attorney or child services. They are trained investigators. If the Catholic Church were serious, all clergy and laity could act as mandated reporters. Educators, medical personnel, and social workers are required by law to report suspected abuse. The authorities are trained to investigate.
