LYNN — The city is soliciting bids to reconstruct what Mayor Thomas M. McGee called a “dysfunctional intersection” known as Agganis Square near Market Basket.
The $2.5 million roadwork improvements are being paid for through a MassWorks infrastructure grant secured for improvements around the supermarket, which opened two years ago.
McGee said the roadwork reconstruction, planned with the state grant funding, will foster growth in the area, which includes a number of businesses.
Bids are being solicited for what the city is calling the “Agganis Square Roundabout Intersection Improvement Project,” and are due on Tuesday, according to the bid document prepared by the city’s purchasing department.
The scope of work includes reconstruction at the intersection of Federal Street, Marion Street and Waterhill Street, known as Agganis Square. The proposed improvements at Agganis Square include the construction of a single-lane roundabout, geometric revisions, pavement rehabilitation, sidewalk improvements, landscaping, and streetlights, according to the bid document.
“I would call that a dysfunctional intersection right now,” McGee said. “With state money, (we) can make sure it works in a much more efficient and safe way for businesses to get people in and out of the area.”
Other improvements planned include the reconstruction of the intersection of Federal Street, Boston Street and North Federal Street. The selected contractor would build a new traffic signal system, pavement overlay, sidewalk and wheelchair ramp.
The intersection of Boston Street, Robinson Street, Marion Street and Kirtland Street will be reconstructed. Expected improvements include pavement mill and overlay, sidewalk and wheelchair ramp reconstruction and the installation of pull boxes and conduit for a future traffic signal and minor landscaping, according to the bid document.
