School Sports Roundup: Classical girls tennis sweeps Somerville

The Classical girls tennis team finished its regular season with a 5-0 win over Northeastern Conference opponent Somerville Thursday at Breed Middle School.

Winners for the Rams were Daphne Pineda (6-2, 6-3 at first singles), Anh Nguyen (6-1, 6-2 at second singles), Kenzie McLaren (7-5, 6-1 at third singles), Lexi Ferraro/Abby Stafford (6-0, 6-1 at first doubles) and Sophia DeFronzo/Jayden Carroca (6-1, 6-0 at second doubles).

The Rams end at 15-3 and await the state tournament pairings.

GIRLS TENNIS

Marblehead 5, Malden 0
Winchester 4, Marblehead 1

The Magicians split a doubleheader Thursday.

In the Malden match, Marblehead got wins from Leah Saulnier (7-5, 6-1 at first singles), Lauren Podgur (6-3, 7-5 at second singles), Kate Curran (6-4, 6-2 at third singles), Alix Livermore/Madeline Bowden (6-1, 6-1 at first doubles) and Rei Newman/Gabby Spungin (6-1, 6-0 in second doubles).

In the Winchester match, the lone winner for the Magicians was Michelle Shub (6-2, 6-1 at first singles).

“It was good for us to face Winchester in the regular season, as we may see them again in states,” said Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman. “They are a well-balanced team. Our girls were pretty tired from their long, competitive matches the day before, so hopefully we can take a few days and rest up and be refreshed once the tournament starts.”

Marblehead closes the season at 18-2 and awaits its seeding in the state tournament.

BOYS TENNIS

Marblehead 4, Malden 1

Winners for Marblehead were Dan Livtak (6-0, 6-1 at second singles), Adam Sherf (6-0, 6-1 at third singles), Ben Farfel/Dylan Freddo (6-0, 6-1 at first doubles) and Gavin Snook/Gresham Bosworth (6-1, 6-1 at second doubles).

BASEBALL

Lynnfield 8, Wakefield 2

Winners of 10 of their last 11 games, the Pioneers (15-5) wrapped up the regular season with a win.

Will Garofoli pitched a complete game, allowing just six hits and two walks with five strikeouts. His bat was even better, going 3-for-4 with a 3-RBI triple and two runs scored.

“The kids did a nice job and they swung the bats aggressively,” said Lynnfield coach John O’Brien. “We got a nice pitching performance from Will.. He also got three key hits for us. We needed this game today to improve our chances at a great seed, so it was an important game for us.”

Trailing 1-0 after one, the Pioneers put the game away with eight runs in the second inning.

Fernando Gonzalez (RBI), Matt Fiore (RBI) and Luke Martinho (RBI, stolen base) had two hits each.

Marblehead 11, Salem 2

The Magicians put up five runs in the fifth inning. Brady Lavender, Charlie Titus, Ryan Harris, and Godot Gaskins each had RBI in the frame.

Jacob Bornstein led the Magicians to victory on the mound. He allowed four hits and two runs over six innings, striking out six. Kyle Saulnier threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Bobby Jellison took the loss for Salem. He lasted four innings, allowing four hits and six runs while striking out three.

Magicians racked up nine hits. Chris Gally and Lavender all collected multiple hits for Magicians. Lavender and Gally all had two hits to lead Magicians.

English 9, Ipswich 6

Ethan Labbe pitched four shutout innings of relief. Jose Morel and Justin Flores each had two RBI. Erick Ubri and Juan Subervi each had two hits. English finishes the regular season 13-7.

Swampscott 11, Northeast 1

Jonathan Oriakhi led Swampcscott’s offense with two solo home runs. Drew Olivieri and Ryan Graciale had two hits each. Nick Reiser, Jack Leahy, Zach Elwell and Cam O’Brien each had a RBI. Aidan Graciale scored two runs.

Max Pegnato fanned seven and allowed two hits over six innings. Swampscott ends the regular season 12-8.

St. John’s 11. Gloucester 2

Alex Lane (2-for-2, four RBI) homered twice, while Brady O’Brien (2-for-3, two RBI) and Zach Knight (1-for-1, two RBI) hit one home run each. Will Potdevin went 3-for-4 and scored three runs. Starting pitcher Matt Remley struck out five over three innings.

The Eagles (15-4) host Walpole Friday (4).

Boston Latin 7, Revere 2

Zach Furlong and Matt Cravotta each went 1-for-4 with one RBI in the loss for the Patriots.

Revere finishes the season at 7-13.

SOFTBALL

Saugus 6, Waltham 0

It’s been a stellar season for Saugus pitcher Caitlyn Wood, but she saved her best performance for the final game of the season. Wood tossed a perfect game against Waltham Thursday, striking out 14 batters in the process. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI.

“I’ve never been a part of something like that, it was very impressive to watch,” said Saugus coach Steve Almquist. “And it couldn’t have happened to a better person. Caitlyn is one of our team leaders and she works so hard every day. I couldn’t be happier for her.”

Also contributing to the win for the Sachems were Kirby Dalton (two hits, RBI), DJ Munafo (three hits, three runs scored) and Kirby Dalton (three hits, two runs scored).

Saugus finishes the regular season at 12-8 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming state tournament.

Swampscott 8, Winthrop 4

The Big Blue were led by two hits apiece from seniors Sydney Cresta and Katie Watts. Riley Scanlon also contributed with two hits.

Swampscott wraps the season Saturday at Peabody (2).

Marblehead 12, Malden 0

The Magicians qualified for the state tournament behind an impressive pitching performance from Charlotte Plakans. After allowing a hit to the first batter of the game, Plakans went on to retire the next 20 batters in a row — striking out 14 in the process. She also had two RBI at the plate.

Madi Monahan led the offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Mercedez Pelletier went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Jolie Quintana went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Marblehead (10-9) now awaits its seeding in the state tournament.

LYNN ELEMENTARY TRACK MEET

The annual elementary track meet kicked off Thursday. Winners for day one were Ingalls’ Jayden Phantharath (8.6, boys 50 meter), Ingalls’ Ariana Freeman (9.0, girls 50 meter), Ingalls’ Christopher Ulloa (17.2, boys 100 meter), Ingalls’ Lovelly Merida (17.7, girls 100 meter), Brickett’s Kenneth Poy (45.0, boys 200 meter), Brickett’s Ada Lucia-Hernandez (40.8, girls 200 meter), Brickett’s Eduardo Aispuro (1:22.00, boys 400 meter), Brickett’s Sabine Desir (1:27.7, girls 400 meter), Ingalls’ Matthew Coelho (3:15.0, boys 800 meter), Ford’s Larissa Alves (3:55.1, girls 800 meter), Ingalls’ Julian Varela (6:04.25, boys long jump), Ford’s Eva Thong (5:09.25, girls long jump), Ford’s Isaiah Goorahlal (7:22.6, boys mile), Ingalls’ Adriana Alvarado (7:25.9, girls mile), Ingalls’ Leury Martinez (120:09, boys softball throw), Ingalls’ Luisianne Quijada (82:05, girls softball throw). The Ford boys and Ingalls girls logged first place in the 4X100 relays.
