SAUGUS — A Saugus man has pleaded not guilty to motor vehicle homicide charges in connection with a July 2018 crash that killed a 23-year-old man in Malden.
Renan DaSilva, 33, of Saugus, was charged with felony motor vehicle homicide and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury. He was indicted in June and arraigned in July. He is expected to appear in court again on Tuesday for scheduling.
DaSilva, who was driving a 2009 Infiniti FX35, was allegedly speeding in the northbound lane of Lynn Street in Malden and crossed the double line, striking a Nissan Altima that was traveling south with two occupants, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.
A passenger in the Nissan, 23-year-old Jakeuderm Bernadin of Somerville, was pronounced dead at the scene.
DaSilva remained on scene and was brought to an area hospital. The driver of the Altima, a 27-year-old man, was also taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by Ryan’s office, the Malden Police Department, and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
