Lynn man fatally shot by police during car chase in Revere

August 4, 2019 by Gayla Cawley

REVERE — A 32-year-old Lynn man was fatally shot by police during a car chase in Revere early Sunday morning, police said.

At about 12:30 a.m., Massachusetts State Police troopers responded to a shooting involving Everett Police on Washington Avenue near the intersection of Sargent Street and found the driver, Oscar D. Ventura-Gonzalez, suffering from a gunshot wound, State Police spokesman David Procopio said.

Ventura-Gonzalez was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where he later died. Police have not identified him.

Authorities said the shooting occurred following an Everett police pursuit into Revere, but an investigation into the facts and circumstances of the incident is being conducted by the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section and its Ballistics Unit, Procopio said.

Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins is investigating whether the use of deadly force by police was justified and promised a “thorough and impartial review.” Rollins asked for peace in the community and the public’s patience while the incident is investigated.

“I’m grateful that no bystanders or members of law enforcement were injured in this morning’s police-involved shooting or the sequence of events that preceded it,” said Rollins in a statement. “However, I acknowledge that a family is grieving the loss of a loved one today. I want to assure that family, the community and members of law enforcement that there will be a transparent and impartial review of this encounter in order to provide the answers that they deserve.”

Anyone who witnessed any part of the incident is urged to contact the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit at 617-727-8817.
