LYNN — A 36-year-old homeless man from Lynn was stabbed to death on Union Street Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Police said they responded to 114 Union St. shortly after 2:30 p.m. and found an unresponsive man outside. Witnesses said the man still had a knife in his chest when he was taken from the scene.
The victim was taken to Salem Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Lynn Police Lt. Larry Wentzell said. His identity has not been released.
An hour after the incident, there was a large police presence on Union Street. The area was sectioned off with crime scene tape.
The incident is under investigation and no arrests have been made.
Two people said they didn’t witness the stabbing, but heard that it was the result of an argument with another person over money. Police and a spokeswoman from the Essex County District Attorney’s office wouldn’t confirm that account.
Nanette Kaba works at Nanette Express African Hair Braiding, a shop near where the stabbing occurred. She didn’t witness the incident, but saw the man lying on the ground and called it “unnerving.”
Bob, a 58-year-old Lynn man who didn’t want to give his last name, said his sister lives nearby and he stopped to see what happened when he saw the large police presence.
“I think it’s crazy,” he said. “I’m afraid to walk around here anymore. It’s ridiculous. I don’t know what this world is coming to.”
