SWAMPSCOTT — A 21-year-old Swampscott man was charged with attempted murder and kidnapping after allegedly trying to kill his girlfriend early Saturday morning.
Christian Flynn, of 22 Ryan Pl., was intoxicated when he allegedly took a broom handle and caused a gash on the 20-year-old victim’s lower lip and held her against her will in his home, according to police reports obtained by the Item. Flynn also grabbed her face, blocked her mouth, pinched her nose, and suffocated her while repeatedly saying he was going to kill her, stated the report.
Flynn’s attorney, Frank Sanchez, declined to comment.
Swampscott Police responded to the Salem Hospital emergency department around 11 a.m. on Saturday and spoke to the victim, according to the report. She told officers that at 4 a.m., she went to Laurel Court in Marblehead to pick up her boyfriend, who she alleged was heavily intoxicated, but he refused to go with her, so she left.
A few minutes later, the victim stated she got a call from Flynn’s friend, who lives in the Laurel Court home, and he told her he wanted Flynn out of his house. She went back, picked him up, and drove him to his house on Ryan Place. That is when he became angry and allegedly attempted to break down a locked door, she stated.
Once inside the house, she said Flynn’s anger escalated and she attempted to leave, which is when he grabbed the broom handle with two hands and caused her lip to bleed profusely, stated the report. She told officers she took out her phone to call 911, but Flynn allegedly took it and threw it against the brick chimney, shattering the screen.
At that point, Flynn began suffocating her, stated the report.
“She stated she struggled to get away but became physically unable to fight back,” said the report. “She explained that he told her repeatedly, as he was suffocating her, that he was going to kill her and she believed that he was going to do so. She stated he let her go just before she completely lost consciousness.”
She attempted to leave Flynn’s home several more times but he allegedly grabbed her by the hair and forcibly prevented her from leaving, said the report. When she began to scream for help, Flynn apparently went around the room and closed all the windows to keep anyone from hearing her, she stated.
A few minutes later, she said she grabbed her phone and was finally able to escape. She ran to Essex Street, called a friend to pick her up, and contacted her parents to come and get her. The victim and her parents then went to the emergency room, said the report.
She told officers she planned to file an emergency restraining order against Flynn once she was released from the hospital.
Soon after Swampscott officers filed the report, they requested an arrest warrant for Flynn. He was taken into custody at the Lynnfield MarketPlace Apple Store around 9 p.m. on Saturday and taken to the Lynn Police Department, where he was held until his arraignment on Monday.
Flynn is charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, assault and battery on a family/household member, witness/juror/police/court official intimidation, and malicious destruction of property worth less than $1,200. He was held without bail until his dangerousness hearing, scheduled for Wednesday.
At the dangerousness hearing, Flynn will be ordered to do random alcohol testing multiple times a day and will be placed under house arrest with a GPS tracking device, said Swampscott Sergeant Jay Locke.
