SWAMPSCOTT — A Swampscott father was arraigned on Monday for allegedly raping his wife in proximity of their young baby, according to police reports.
A 31-year-old man was arraigned at Lynn District Court on charges of rape, assault and battery on a family/household member, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, stated the report. The charges were filed after Swampscott Police responded to their home on Crescent Street for a disturbance call around 5 p.m. on Friday.
The man is not being named to protect the identity of the alleged sexual assault victim.
When officers arrived, they could hear loud male and female voices coming from the second floor of the Crescent Street building, stated the report. They made contact with a downstairs neighbor, who let them inside and showed them upstairs to the second floor.
Officers reached the apartment and when they knocked on the door, the man came out and identified himself and his wife as the residents, stated the report. The wife was sitting down behind him, caring for their young baby, when one of the officers observed her crying. While trying not to draw their attention away from her husband, the woman allegedly mouthed “help me.”
The alleged victim told officers her husband slapped her in the face and held a knife to her throat, stated the report. Then, she said he threw her on the ground and used the knife to cut off her clothes in front of the baby. Soon after that is when her husband raped her, she told police.
Officers asked the man if he physically assaulted his wife and, according to the report, he said no. He replied the same answer when officers asked if his wife physically assaulted him.
The wife told officers they have other children who were not home at the time of the alleged attack, stated the report.
Officers from the Swampscott patrol and detective units and State Police crime scene services recovered the wife’s destroyed clothes and submitted them for evidence, stated the report. Officers placed the husband under arrest and brought the wife to an area hospital.
On Monday, the husband was held without bail pending his dangerousness hearing on Tuesday.
