WEYMOUTH — A Saugus Police officer answered a mighty call.
Officer Domenic Montano, the community events coordinator for the police union, joined 39 other officers from across the state to visit a Weymouth 3-year-old on Tuesday.
Quinn Waters, also known as “The Mighty Quinn,” was diagnosed with a brain tumor a day after his third birthday in February and has been housebound because of his weakened immune system. For months, police officers, athletes and others have been visiting his bedroom window to cheer him up. The toddler has received letters and photos from everyone from former President Barack Obama to NASA astronaut Andrew Jay Feustel.
Children have stopped by to sing to Waters, strangers have shown up dressed as his favorite movie characters, and others have organized motorcycle, fire truck and other parades.
“Cancer is one of those issues that really bothers me,” said Montano, who lost his grandmother to breast cancer in June. “I know what it’s like to have a loved one going through treatment. It’s a tough and emotional journey. To think that it’s a little 3-year-old kid who just started his life … It’s something that no kid should have to deal with at that age.”
Following a rolling convoy, Montano brought Waters several patches that he has designed for the department, including a breast cancer awareness patch and autism patch, and a T-shirt from a car shop the union held last month.
State Police and officers from other departments gave him other patches, T-shirts and coins, he said.
“He was in awe — he was just so happy,” said Montano. “He was smiling and not sad. It was nice.”
