Swampscott Amazon delivery packages left in cemetery trash

SWAMPSCOTT — One Amazon driver is responsible for the undelivered packages left in trash barrels in both Burlington and Swampscott cemeteries.

The Burlington Police Department tweeted that a “diligent groundskeeper” found about 20 Amazon packages in a trash barrel in a town cemetery on Monday, according to the Associated Press. The town wasn’t alone. Swampscott Police reported on Tuesday morning that 29 Amazon packages were found in several trash barrels throughout the historic Swampscott Cemetery.

“Someone was visiting the cemetery at about 6 p.m. on Monday and noticed a large number of packages sticking out of one of the barrels,” said Swampscott Sgt. Jay Locke. “They went up and took a look and sure enough all the packages were undelivered, full, and still sealed. One barrel was stuffed to the gills and there were smaller packages found in other barrels, as well.”

A representative from Amazon told the Item Tuesday night that the undelivered- cemetery- trash barrel packages were supposed to be delivered by the same driver. All the packages have been retrieved, they said, and all customers will be notified if there are any further delivery delays.

“This does not reflect the high standards we have for delivery partners and how they serve customers,” the Amazon representative said in a statement. “This individual is no longer delivering Amazon packages.”

Locke said Amazon came and recovered the packages from the station, 15 of which were intended to be delivered to Swampscott residents. The police department is working with the company’s security team to make sure all the packages are returned to their owners. They are also investigating how the packages came to be in the trash, he added.

“These were probably dumped before they even were scanned over to a house,” Locke said. “I don’t even think people knew there packages were left undelivered.”
