In its biggest win of the year, the Lynnfield boys soccer team battled through sheets or rain to get to .500 for the first time with a 3-2 win over Newburyport, which came into the game undefeated and in first place in the Cape Ann League Kinney Division.
The game was tied 1-1 at the half. Lynnfield’s Tommy Buston scored two goals in the second half to seal the win. Tommy Hauser scored the Pioneers’ first-half goal.
“Our defense played a tremendous game, especially Luke Martinho and Matt Juliano along with our goalie Dante Gesamondo,” said Lynnfield coach Brent Munroe. “This was just a huge win as we needed to beat one of the stronger teams to keep our tournament hopes alive.”
Lynnfield, now 5-5, is back in action Tuesday at Amesbury (3:45).

At Manning Field, Bibek Gurung scored both Tech goals.

Tech 4, PMA 0
This one belonged to Helen Pojoy, who netted all four Tech goals in the win.
“We put in a great performance,” Tech coach Dave Miller said. “The girls came ready and got to business. We were up 2-0 at halftime and put two more in the second half. It was just a good all-around win.”
Adrianna Torres and Sheily Gomez each had an assist.
Tech (3-0 in CAC Small, 3-6) travels to Greater Lawrence next Thursday.
GOLF
Beverly 36, Classical 12
The match was shortened to six holes due to rain.
Luke Rao, Kyle McCarthy and Matt Devin were the top performers for Classical. The Rams (8-5) visit Malden for a non-conference match Tuesday (4) at Mount Hood.
Marblehead 31 1/2, Saugus 21 1/2
In a rain-shortened match at King Rail Golf Club, the Magicians got wins from Ben Weed (7-1), Gavin Lundgren (5 1/2-3 1/2), Jacob Nagel (6 1/2-2 1/2), Drake Wyman (3-1) and Bjorn Pluss (2 1/2-1 1/2). Dylan Callaghan and Jack Sontz both split their matches.
Marblehead (5-4) plays on the road at Gloucester Thursday (4).
VOLLEYBALL
Peabody 3, English 0
The Tanners won by set scores of 25-22, 25-12, 25-9.
Sarah Broughton had seven aces and 14 service points. Aaliyah Alleyne added nine kills, while Maria Chouinard contributed three aces and played solid defense.
For English, Angel Batista, Merily Folestal, Riffliene Altidor and Mandy Healy all played well in the loss.
English (2-5) hosts Beverly Thursday (5:30).

Marblehead won by set scores of 25-13, 25-19, 25-14.
Anna Arbo and Anna Schluter each had four kills, while Arianna Michaud added in another four kills and five digs. Abby Schwartz had three aces.
Marblehead (6-3) takes on Masconomet Friday (5:30).

Despite the loss, the Rams had two runners finish in the top four with Kevin Baker placing third (19:42) and Max Gonzalez finishing fourth (20:00).
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Classical 15, Salem 50
Classical took the top two spots in the victory, with Rachel Brennan winning the race (21:59) and Miriam Bamaca placing second (23:08).
