With Monday’s 146-117 win over Rockport at Sagamore Spring Golf Course, the Lynnfield golf team qualified for the Division 3 North tournament. The Pioneers also honored their six seniors on Senior Day.
Fittingly, it was a pair of seniors who came up clutch to help secure the win.
The match was tied at 94 all after the first four matches. Matt Stephens scored 25 points in the No. 5 slot, then No. 7 Bryan Mallett scored a season-and team-high 27 points in the final group to tip the match in the Pioneers’ favor.
“Both Matty and Bryan scored above their season averages, so that allowed us to toss out our lowest score and give us the match,” said Lynnfield coach Mike Moresco. “They both stepped up in a big way and were the difference.”
Senior Tom Sciaudone also scored 27 points, while partner Jack LaCoste, a senior captain, scored 26. Sophomore Cate MacDonald was next with 24 points, while senior captain Cole Giannasca had 17 and senior Danny Mack had 16. Sophomore Alex Sieve scored seven points.
“I don’t think we’ve ever had a Senior Day so this was just a great idea. We have six great seniors who get along and lift each other up,” Moresco said. “It was just an amazing day. I’m grateful to such a great group of parents, especially Pam MacDonald, for putting this together.
“These seniors are our Clydesdales who are pulling our wagon this year, our core group, so it was a great way to acknowledge how important they all are to this year’s success.”
Moresco said he can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the team punched its ticket to the tourney.
“We have a couple of tough matches coming up against Triton Wednesday, who’s undefeated, and also North Reading Thursday, who’s always tough, so I wouldn’t have been surprised at all if we were 5-5 going into that final match next week against a very good Georgetown team needing to win to make states,” Moresco said. “It was great to get that sixth win and get that out of the way.”
Fenwick 175, Spellman 141
Gavin Belt (31 points), Jake Murphy (28), John Bennett (26), Brendan Bloom (24) and Cade Buckley (24) were Fenwick’s top performers.
Fenwick (5-3) travels to Matignon Wednesday (2:45).
BOYS SOCCER
Tech 8, Nashoba Valley Tech 0
Bibek Gurung’s hat trick led Tech’s offense. Also netting goals were Bilder Arreaga (two), Asbhy Murphy, Jose Gomez and Jose Monzano.
“The kids started to listen when we told them to play the ball on the ground, quick passes and finishing,” Tech coach Eric Moreno Sr. said. “They were able to finish inside the 18. It comes down to keeping the ball on the ground, completing passes and communicating better.
“We moved Bibek from outside mid to striker. The last two games, he’s scored five goals. That’s really helping us.”
Tigers goalies Junior Ramirez, Jeisson Alarcon and Jairo Lopez split time in net.
Tech (4-3-3) hosts Mystic Valley Thursday (3:45).
Fenwick 3, Austin Prep 0
Sean Kern added two goals to his impressive season and Andrew Perry scored one. Cormac Hinchey (two assists) and Andrew Perry (assist) helped create the opportunities.
Jameson Martinez led the defense. Goalien Liam Foley made three saves for his third shutout.
Fenwick (6-2) visits St. Mary’s next Monday (3:30).
GIRLS SOCCER
Revere 4, English 2
The Bulldogs competed but fell just short in a non-conference defeat.
“We played one of our better games,” English coach Ed McNeil said. “They’re unbeaten, 7-0-1. They have a very good team. We played well. Revere was a better team but we hung with them. I was very pleased. I hope we can continue to play that well for the rest of the year.”
Melissa Zayas netted her seventh goal of the year. Ashley Martinez scored her second goal of the season. Goalie Elysse Newson made 20 saves. Arianna Garcia and Malaz Abdelrahman also played well for the Bulldogs.
“I like the way we played,” McNeil said. “We were missing Ravyn Rapley, our starting sweeper, and I think that hurt us. But the girls stepped up and I thought they played very, very well.”
The Bulldogs, 2-8-1 on the season, welcome Swampscott to Manning Field Wednesday (7).
“Swampscott is very strong,” McNeil said. “They’re tough, they’re very good. We’re going to play defensive. Hopefully we have Ravyn back. With not much depth, we’ve had to move players around and that has hurt us in some games. But we’re getting healthier now.”
Williams 4, St. Mary’s 0
The Spartans fell to 5-4 on the season with the road loss.
“We just got outplayed,” Spartans coach Jim Foley said. “It was one of those weird games. I’m not sure what happened.”
Abby Constine played well for the Spartans.
St. Mary’s hosts Spellman Wednesday (3:30) at Manning Field.
“I think we have to work harder,” Foley said. “We’ve had to change some things around after some injuries and things like that. We have to refocus and get back to work.”
VOLLEYBALL
Salem 3, St. Mary’s 1
The Spartans battled back after dropping the first two sets, won the third set but fell two points short in the fourth set.
