The St. Mary’s girls soccer team punched its ticket to the state tournament Monday afternoon with a close 3-2 win over Catholic Central League foe Archbishop Williams at Manning Field.
“It’s always a goal of ours to make it into the state tournament, so it feels great to check off that accomplishment,” said St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley. “We really had to fight for the win in this one and come from behind, so it felt a little extra special.”
Emily Egan came through with the game winner for the Spartans, knocking home a penalty kick late in the second half. Kayla Demers scored two goals in the win, while Susannah Cornell and Gabby Diaz each had one assist. Goalkeeper Liza Brown had 12 saves and stopped a crucial penalty kick in the win.
St. Mary’s (8-6-2) travels to Salem Monday (4).
GIRLS SOCCER
Beverly 2, Peabody 1
Bridget O’Connell scored the lone goal for Peabody, while Aja Alimonti had one assist. Colleen Crotty, Maddy Scacchi, Emma Darling, Meghan Billingsley and Jordyn Collins played well defensively in the loss. Goalkeeper Emma Bloom had seven saves.
The Tanners (9-6) host Swampscott Wednesday night (7).
BOYS SOCCER
KIPP 6, Excel 2
Despite trailing 2-1 at halftime, the Panthers rallied for five goals in the second half to take home the win. Marco Escobar, Kenny deLeon, Anderson Rodriguez, Jeff Paz and Angel Zuniga each had one goal.
KIPP hosts CCSC Tuesday evening (5:15) at Manning Field.
Bishop Fenwick 2, Austin Prep 2
Sean Kern and Ryan Noci each scored a goal in the draw for the Crusaders. Fenwick (8-4-2) hosts Triton Wednesday night (7).
Archbishop Williams 4, St. Mary’s 0
Jacob Guarino had 25 saves in the loss for St. Mary’s, while Eduardo Toranzo and Ryan Fraher played well defensively.
St. Mary’s hosts Tewksbury next Monday (4).
Beverly 5, Peabody 0
Peabody falls to 11-5 on the season. The Tanners take on Marblehead Thursday (6:30).
GOLF
Division 3 North sectionals
St. Mary’s will once again battle for a Division 3 state championship, as the Spartans shot a team score of 335 at Sandy Burr Country Club to finish in second place at the Division 3 North sectional tournament.
“We’re pretty excited to be back in the mix, but we know we’re going up against some tough teams in the state tournament,” said Spartans coach Jay Fiste. “We had a really good showing (Monday) on a tough course in tough conditions.”
On an individual level, Aidan Emmerich shot a score of 77 to finish in third place. Luke Sargent (82) finished tied for sixth place and Luke Smith (83) finished tied for 11th place. Sean Mathers (93), Pete Pagliuca (95) and Rich Pagliuca (104) also recorded scores for the Spartans.
Next up for St. Mary’s is the Division 3 state championship, which will take place next Monday (9) at Cranberry Valley Golf Course in Harwich.
“We’re looking forward to it,” Fiste said. “We’re going down on Sunday for a practice round to get familiar with the course, so I feel that we’ll be in pretty good shape when the tournament comes around.”
Division 2 North sectionals
Salem’s Ethan Doyle shot a score of 75 at Far Corner Golf Club in Boxford to finish tied for third place in the Division 2 North sectional tournament. With the finish, Doyle earns a spot in the Division 2 state championship at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown next Tuesday (9).
For Marblehead, co-captain Ben Weed shot a score of 81 and finished tied for 23rd place.
VOLLEYBALL
English 3, Saugus 1
English earned the win by set scores of 18-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-17.
Abnerliz Ocasio-Lugo had six aces and four kills in the win, while Merily Folestal had 10 kills and four blocks. Mandy Healy added eight aces and Angel Batista had 10 aces.
The Bulldogs (4-7) travels to Winthrop Wednesday (5:15).
Danvers 3, Peabody 1
The Tanners fell by set scores of 20-25, 25-19, 12-25, 18-25.
Aaliyah Alleyne had eight kills and two blocks, while Sarah Broughton had four kills. Isabel Bettencourt added 14 assists in the loss.
Peabody takes on Hamilton-Wenham Tuesday (5).
