Tragedy struck the family of a retired Lynn firefighter over the weekend.
Carmine Amabile, 56, of Waterboro, Maine, and formerly of Saugus, was killed when he was struck by a falling tree on Saturday morning, according to his father, Sebastian Amabile, who worked for the Lynn Fire Department for 31 years before retiring in 2001.
The tragic accident occurred while Carmine was working in the yard with his father and brother, Dan, taking down a tree, “when the unthinkable happened,” according to his obituary.
The incident occurred in Waterboro, where the family has been residing for more than 20 years.
“Everybody is in a lousy position right now,” Sebastian said. “Obviously, we loved him dearly.”
Carmine’s mother, Janice, described him as the “most wonderful, beautiful and kindhearted son.
“It’s a tragic, sudden accident that has left us all devastated,” she said.
She directed The Item to her son’s obituary for further details, where the family described him as a loving husband, devoted father, beloved son, dear brother and cherished uncle.
Carmine and his wife of 25 years, Michelle, moved to Waterboro in 1996, where they worked to build a life together and raise three sons. He grew to love the Maine lifestyle, where he enjoyed jogging on their country road, fishing and hunting with his sons, off-roading and “wrenching on the Jeeps.”
“Carmine was a humble, generous of heart kind-of-guy, and was always there to help anyone who needed a hand,” reads the obituary.
Along with his wife, Carmine is survived by his sons, Carmine, 23, Anthony, 21, Leonardo, 20; his parents, Sebastian and Janice; and his siblings, Teresa (Amabile) Moore and husband Robert, Daniel and Kathleen (Brown) Amabile, and Marie Elena Amabile and Paul Gilmour.
Carmine and his brother, Dan, owned Amabile Brothers Plastering, a third-generation company passed down to them by their father.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Lynn Fire Department shared its condolences.
“The Lynn Fire Department extends its deepest sympathies to Sebastian “Sammy” Amabile at the tragic loss of his son, Carmine,” said Lynn Fire Chief Stephen Archer. “Sammy was a valued member of this department for 31 years and we are grieving with him and his family at this difficult time.”
