SAUGUS — A 57-year-old woman crashed into Giovanni’s Roast Beef & Pizza in Saugus early Saturday morning.
Saugus Police responded to 194 Broadway for a reported motor vehicle crash at about 7:22 a.m., according to a press release from Saugus Interim Police Chief Ronald Giorgetti. Responding officers arrived to find a 2016 Mercedes Benz E350, driven by an unidentified Melrose resident, crashed roughly three-quarters the way into the restaurant’s front entrance.
The driver was the sole occupant of the car and was evaluated at the scene, but declined further medical attention, Giorgetti said. At the time of the crash the restaurant was closed and no one was in the building.
An initial on-scene investigation indicates that the driver did not appear to be impaired, he said. Human error or mechanical failure are the two most likely causes of the crash, he added.
The incident is still under investigation by the Saugus Police Department. Giovanni’s will not be allowed to reopen until the structural damage is assessed.
