Nahant sets dates for Special Town Meeting, special election

NAHANT — Circle Nov. 23 and Jan. 29 on the calendar if you are a town resident interested in participating in an upcoming Special Town Meeting and special election.

Nov. 23 is a Saturday and the Special Town Meeting will be held in Town Hall on Nahant Road beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The four-article meeting warrant includes a request for meeting members to consider raising or appropriating town money to operate the Water and Sewer Enterprise Fund. Article Two asks Special Town Meeting to allocate $20,000 to purchase an ocean rescue boat.

Article Three amends the town zoning bylaw section applying to uses permitted in a natural resource by referencing nonprofit religious or educational purposes.

Article Four seeks to clarify the definition of nonprofit religious or educational purposes with new language limiting approval for these uses locally as defined under state law with limitations on parking.

Board of Selectmen Chairman Richard Lombard said the zoning articles are citizen petitions and their language will be explained along with arguments for and against the proposals in the Special Town Meeting “blue book” scheduled to be published next week.

Voter registration for the Special Town Meeting is Wednesday, Nov. 13, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. at Town Hall.

The special election will be held to fill the selectman’s seat vacated with former Selectman Francis “Enzo” Barile’s resignation in October. Dec. 10, 5 p.m. is the last day for candidates to file nomination papers and 32 town voters signatures are required for certification.

Dec. 27 is the last day for candidates to withdraw from the race. Voter registration will be held on Jan. 9 from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Town Clerk Margaret Barile said the January election is the first special election to be held in town since October, 2010.

Former Town Administrator Mark Cullinan announced in October his intention to run for the vacant seat.
