WINDHAM, NH — Former Lynnfield High wrestling standout Dom Monzione is back in the ring – the boxing ring that is.
Monzione is the first bout on the card at the Second Annual Thanksgiving Eve Boxing Spectacular next Wednesday at the Castleton Banquet and Conference Center. Monzione will take on New Bedford’s Henry Garcia in a four-round lightweight fight. The event is being conducted by Boston Boxing Promotions.
Monzione (3-0) has never had a bout go beyond the opening round in his career. In stark contrast, Garcia has gone the distance in all five of his professional fights with 20 professional rounds under his belt, while Monzione has spent less than nine minutes in the ring as a pro fighter.
“The Castleton in Windham is going to be the place to be on Thanksgiving Eve,” said Monzione. “I’m going to stick to the same game plan I always do. I’ll box, keep my chin down and hands up, listen to what my coach, Joe Lake, tells me, and I know it’s going to be an exciting fight, and I’m sure Henry feels the same way.”
Monzione made his Boston Boxing Promotions debut back in May of 2019 with a first-round TKO over Vermont’s Andre Belcarris. Two week later, he graduated from Merrimack College. Monzione is employed as a financial analyst at Electric Insurance.
The 2015 Lynnfield graduate turned pro in 2016 following an outstanding high school career wrestling for the Lynnfield/North Reading co-op team (LNR).
Monzione’s name is all over the Lynnfield wrestling record book. A four-time Iron Man honoree, he had a breakout season his senior year, winning the Division 2 North sectional championship and Cape Ann League championship at 145 pounds. He capped his stellar career with a fifth-place finish at the State Division 2 championship meet. A member of the Lynnfield High School Wrestling Hall of Fame, two-time century point winner and two-time state, sectional and CAL place finisher, he finished his career 78-22 overall and in the top-25 all-time in overall wins, despite missing most of his freshman and sophomore years with a dislocated elbow.
“He had only a 2-0 record going into his junior year and still finished top-25 in all-time wins and also placed in the top-50 all-time in points (224),” said LNR coach Craig Stone. “But I remember most is his attitude, drive and discipline.”
Henry Garcia made his Boston Boxing Promotions debut in January 2019 with a back-and-forth slugfest against New Jersey’s Malcolm Simms that ended in a draw. In his most recent fight, Garcia scored a knockdown over Maine’s Ernesto Ornelas in the second round, but lost a close split-decision on the judges’ scorecards.
“Dominic Monzione is going to want to stand and fight, and I’m going to be happy to give it back to him and come out with the win. Momentum may be on his side, but experience is on mine. I have a feeling the fans are going to love this fight,” said Garcia.
