SWAMPSCOTT–The Marblehead offense was pure perfection Saturday morning in its annual powderpuff game against Swampscott.
The Magicians had five possessions and scored five touchdowns, rolling over their hosts, 33-12 at Blocksidge Field.
In a game filled with big plays from both her offense and her defense, Marblehead coach Jacqueline Bouchard said that her highlight of the day was the smiles on her girls faces when the game ended.
“The girls were prepared, the coaches were prepared, we went out and did what we had to do,” Bouchard said. “Our defense played great and our offense played great too.”
Marblehead’s defense allowed a first down on On the Big Blue’s game-opening drive, Marblehead made two stops in the Blue backfield to force a punt. The the Magician offense immediately kicked into gear.
On its second play, Summer Uhrich rolled 47 yards for a score and the first of Mia Atallah’s three conversion kicks put the guests on top, 7-0, with seven minutes left in the first.
It took six plays to get in the end zone on Marblehead’s second possession, this time Olivia Cleary ran in from the two, and the Magicians took a 14-0 lead into halftime.
Grace Doody took the kickoff to start the second half into the end zone, but the Magicians were flagged, and the ball was placed on the Blue 24. Two plays later it was Bryn Burton who got the third Marblehead touchdown, putting Swampscott in a 21-0 hole early in the third.
Swampscott showed some spark on its next drive, covering 67 yards in eight plays, with Emerson Laundry scoring from nine yards out to make it 21-6.
The spark the Big Blue showed was quickly extinguished when Carter Murray broke free for a 60-yard score two minutes after Laundry’s touchdown.
Swampscott got the ball back and got put another one in the end zone, but the drive ate up most of the fourth quarter. Ashley Engstrom’s TD made the score 27-12, but the Blue would have to score 15 points in 36 seconds to tie it, and Marblehead was getting the ball back.
The final play of the game kept Marblehead perfect when Atallah connected with Callie O’Neill with a 77-yard touchdown pass as time expired.
Swampscott coach Joe Tenney said that the only thing that was disappointing for him was the final score, he was proud of his team, and they were all smiles too in the locker room after the game.
“To see these girls grow as their class advisor, and come together as a team for this game was great, the result of the game wasn’t what we hoped for, but everything else was great,” Tenney said.
Proceeds from Saturday’s game went toward the Ryan Fader Foundation, which teaches students about substance abuse and substance awareness.
