A Lynn mother and her autistic 12-year-old son thought they had finally caught a break. After years of struggle, they had a small but nice apartment, and mom’s job paid just enough for food and a place to call home. There wasn’t much money left over, but they were happy.
And then disaster: A fire in their building. Having no insurance, the two lost everything and have had to start over. They have been living in a shelter for the past few months.
“I never thought we’d be homeless,” wrote the mother in a letter to Item Santa. “My boy has been through a lot, and I would really like to see him smile on Christmas morning. Please help me bring him some joy and happiness this holiday season. Your help would be gratefully appreciated.”
Now in its 53rd year, the Item Santa fund helps to make the holidays brighter for those in need. Launched in 1966, the annual fundraiser is run in conjunction with the Salvation Army, which coordinates the program by sorting out requests, purchasing the toys and clothing, and all donations, no matter how small. Last year, the drive netted more than $108,626.51 in pledges. Included in that was a $35,000 donation from General Electric.
To donate, clip the coupon in The Item and mail it, along with your check, to The Item Salvation Army Santa, PO Box 5, Lynn, MA 01903.
