Senior netminder Sal Caruso logged his second consecutive shutout with 21 saves as the St. Mary’s boys hockey team blanked Malden Catholic, 4-0, in the championship game of the Christie Serino Christmas Tournament at Valley Forum Saturday.

“To play two teams like Austin Prep and Malden Catholic and shut them both out was really an amazing feat for Sal,” Spartans coach Mark Lee said. “He was really on his game. Malden Catholic really had the edge for the first 10 minutes. Sal really kept us in with some big saves and we started to find our feet.”

Caruso, who logged 40 saves over the two games, was named the tournament’s MVP. Freshman Brady Bullock was the tournament’s top offensive player. Bullock scored two goals and dished one assist in Saturday’s win.

“Brady’s talented, he’s young and he’s improving,” Lee said. “This is the first year he’s playing a regular shift. He’s developing a lot of maturity. We see him getting better as the season goes on.”

Dante D’Ambrosio and Brady Carpenter scored one goal each. Logging assists were Davis Kinne, Kyle LoNigro, Owen Maguire, Max Giardina and Chris Kolodziej.

“We stayed out of the penalty box,” Lee said. “Having 2-minute penalties can really affect the game. We did a really good job of playing disciplined hockey.”

The Spartans (4-0-1) return to their home ice Wednesday (3) to host Archbishop Williams.

“We only had one home game the entire first month,” Lee said. “Playing the way we’ve played on the road is a positive we’ll take away but getting back to our home rink will be nice. I’m proud of the way our kids have responded with some challenges early on. We’ve played some very good teams.”
