Police: Driver overdoses, crashes into seven cars in Lynn

LYNN — It was like a scene out of “Demolition Derby” on Neptune Boulevard Sunday afternoon when a 37-year-old Nahant man crashed his white Jeep into numerous parked cars.

The wreckage, which police said occurred after the man overdosed,  resulted in two injuries and seven parked cars being towed from the scene with extensive damage.

“This is insane,” said Joe Messina, 68. “Somebody had to be absolutely flying because this isn’t just ‘oh, I’m sorry, I bumped your car.’ Absolutely insane.”

Messina said he lives around the corner and happened to be walking on Commercial Street when he saw lights and two cars “blitzed.” He then started heading home.

“That’s when I saw this demolition derby here,” said Messina.

The destruction started at about 2:30 p.m. when the Nahant man crashed his Jeep into numerous parked cars along Neptune Boulevard. He allegedly continued to crash into cars on the intersecting South Elm Street, where police found him unconscious inside his vehicle, police said.

Lynn Fire crews had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate him from the Jeep. Narcan was administered and the man, whose name was not released, was taken to Salem Hospital. He will be cited for several motor vehicle charges, police said.

Another driver, a 22-year-old Lynn man whose vehicle was struck, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. All of the other cars were parked and unoccupied at the time of the crash, police said.

One of those parked cars, a Honda Sante Fe, belonged to Hamlert Sanchez. The 37-year-old said he was inside his Neptune Street home when he heard a crash. He looked outside his window and saw someone had hit his car.

“I saw all the mess,” said Sanchez. “I need a new (car). I’ve got to know how I’m going to get to work tomorrow.”
