LYNNFIELD — The town and its fire-fighting community were left feeling a little emptier last week when retired Lieutenant Jon A. Procurot, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Dec. 29 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
Procurot, 76, was a well known lifelong resident of Lynnfield.
Lynnfield Fire Chief Glenn Davis posted a condolence message on the department’s Facebook page.
He asked that residents “Please keep Jon’s wife Jean as well as Jon’s children and grandchildren in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
Davis said he was fortunate to have worked alongside Procurot for nearly his entire 30-year time in the department.
“He was definitely a mentor and just a great role model to all of us, especially the younger members of the department,” said Davis. “He was always laughing and smiling and teasing and his smile was just who he was, all the time.”
The son of the late Antonio and Evelyn E. (Curio) Procurot, he graduated from Lynnfield High in 1961 and was an accomplished baseball player and member of a state championship team. He joined the Lynnfield Fire Department in 1964 and served until 2010. He had also worked for many years for the Frito-Lay Company. He coached in the Lynnfield Little League and was an avid gardener, golfer and devoted grandfather and father.
Davis said Procurot will be missed.
“His family was the most important thing in his life, and then came the fire department,” said Davis. “He was a wonderful person and a devoted father, husband and grandfather.”
Procurot leaves his wife, Jean M. (LeBlanc) Procurot and children, Tammy L. Ministeri and her husband, Larry, of Tewksbury, Scott A. Procurot and his wife, Suzanne, of Billerica and Shawn A. Procurot and his wife, Kelly, of Groveland, as well as grandchildren Lindsey, Erin, James and Aiden. He was the brother of Carol Varney and Linda Ford and her husband John, all of Maine.
Procurot served alongside his son Scott for a short period of time, while son Shawn was a firefighter in Groveland.
“They really kept it in the family,” said Davis. “Jon was such an active member of the fire department and his kids were always around the station, at cookouts and outings, and just kind of being there. I believe that Scott spent a couple of years on the Lynnfield force and that Shawn put in about 15 years in Groveland. They just grew up with it.”
His funeral was Saturday, Jan. 4. Donations in Procurot’s memory may be made to the Lynnfield Firefighters Relief Association, 59 Summer St, Lynnfield, MA 01940 or to the Shriners Hospitals for Children at the Boston, Development Office, 51 Blossom St, Boston, MA 02114.
