The Classical boys basketball team rallied back from a 16-point deficit on the road Friday night to take down Peabody, 51-49, on a last-second basket.
The Rams clawed their way back into the game throughout the entire second half, tying the game at 49-49 with two seconds remaining. With Peabody covering up Classical top scorers Jeff Hill and Jeff Barbosa on the final play, Brandon Summers lobbed a pass into the paint to Angel Garcia, who quickly tipped it in at the buzzer for the game-winner.
Hill led the way for Classical with 17 points, while Barbosa added 12. Garcia closed the game with six points and 11 rebounds.
Classical (8-3) takes on cross-town rival English Tuesday night (7).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Malden Catholic 72, St. Mary’s 58
The Spartans dropped their second straight game. David Brown scored 17 points to lead the offense.
St. Mary’s (9-2) is back in action Monday afternoon (12) on the road against Portland (ME).
Shawsheen 54, Tech 45
Tech’s top performers were Julian Peralta (16 points, six rebounds), Yael Vizcaino (eight points, three steals) and Carlos Mateo (seven points, 12 rebounds).
Tech (2-7) travels to Swampscott Monday (2).
KIPP Academy 81, Fellowship 34
The Panthers improved to 7-2 and turn their attention Monday’s (7) home game against Revere.
Beverly 86, Winthrop 42
At Beverly, the Panthers, 9-0, kept their undefeated record intact. Winthrop hosts Salem Tuesday (7).
St. John’s 81, Xaverian 54
With 12 different scorers, the Eagles picked up their first Catholic Conference win of the season. Rollie Castineyra swished five 3-pointers and led St. John’s with 22 points. Aidan Callahan added 17 points.
The Eagles (5-4) play O’Bryant Monday (11) at Cathedral High.
Salem 50, Danvers 39
Bobby Jellison led the way with 18 points, five rebounds and eight assists for Salem, while Guillermo Pimentel added 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.
The Witches (6-4) travel to Winthrop Tuesday night (7).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
St. Mary’s 54, Hilton Head (SC) 12
The Spartans raced out to a 21-5 lead after one quarter and coasted to their 13th consecutive win to move to 13-1 on the season.
Olivia Matela led the Spartans’ attack with 16 points (all in the first half) while Maiya Bergdorf added 10 points. Nicolette D’Itria, Gabby Torres, Jannise Avelino and Alyssa Grossi were all very solid for St. Mary’s on both ends of the floor.
Chloe Vail and Madison Spencer scored their first varsity points.
The Spartans play Bluffton High (SC) Saturday (3:30).
Saugus 68, Gloucester 33
Nicole Stewart and April Aldred scored six points each. Samantha Shea and Cassandra Israleson also played well.
Saugus (8-2) hosts Danvers Friday (7).
Tech 35, Notre Dame 31
Tech was led by Alondra Sanchez, who scored 18 points in the victory. Iranis Julio added eight points for the Tigers.
Tech (5-6) takes on Nashoba Tech Tuesday afternoon (4).
Winthrop 42, Beverly 40
This one belonged to Maura Dorr, who hit a long-distance 3-pointer at the buzzer for the win. Dorr carried the Vikings with 28 points and 16 rebounds. Polina Bell and Julia Maroccio also played well. Winthrop hosts Revere Monday (1).
Matignon 60, Swampscott 41
The Big Blue (2-8) travel to Gloucester Tuesday (7).
SWIMMING
Swampscott 103, Classical 75
While the Rams didn’t have any first-place finishers, Jacob Lang placed second in both the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle. Adam Mariano placed second in the 100 butterfly, Maxwell Gonzalez finished second in the 100 backstroke and Cate Hines finished second in diving.
