The St. Mary’s girls basketball team returns home from its mid-season trip to South Carolina with two wins and keeps its 14-game unbeaten streak intact.
Saturday, after trailing by double-digits in the second quarter, the Spartans found their groove in time for an 81-63 win over Bluffton- the No. 8 ranked team in South Carolina.
A 25-8 run to the first half gave St. Mary’s a 36-24 lead at halftime and the Spartans rolled from there on out.
St. Mary’s got excellent balance on offense with scoring from Maiya Bergdorf (16), Gabby Torres (16), Olivia Matela (16), Nicolette D’Itria (13), Jannise Avelino (10), and Van Nguyen (10).
The Spartans shot a blistering 54% (26-48) from the floor making 14 of 23 two-point field goals and 12 of 25 from three-point land. They were also excellent from the free throw line making 17 of 22 (77%).
“It was a great win,” coach Jeff Newhall said. “We faced an excellent opponent, faced spots of adversity and were able to come away with a big road win. The balance we had on offense was outstanding. When you have five players in double figures and score 81 points, you should win most of the time.”
The Spartans are off until Friday night’s (6:30) contest at Catholic Central League rival Fenwick.
