Emily Clough’s 22 points and 15 rebounds guided the Marblehead girls basketball team to its tournament-clinching 10th victory as the Magicians snuck past Danvers, 56-54, Tuesday night.
Marblehead, 10-2, snapped a 2-game skid.
Cat Candelaria (four assists) made her first varsity start at point guard and “she played unbelievable,” coach Paul Moran said.
Marblehead visits Winthrop Friday (6:30).
“It’s nice to get back on the winning side,” Moran said. “We’re enjoying it. We’re in the tournament so now we get to have a little fun.”
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Tech 53, Nashoba 23
Alondra Sanchez scored 23 points to lead the way for Tech, while Iranis Julio netted 12 points and Amie Diaz scored six points.
The Tigers (6-6) travel to KIPP Friday evening (6:30).
Beverly 59, Peabody 43
Amber Kiricoples drove the Tanners with another double-double, scoring 12 points and hauling in 12 rebounds. Emma Bloom and Georgia Leon each scored eight points.
“We cut it down to eight points early in the fourth quarter, we just couldn’t get over the hump,” Peabody coach Stan McKeen said. “We’re back to the drawing board.”
Peabody (3-7) hosts Somerville Thursday (7).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Marblehead 59, Danvers 50
Behind a huge second-half effort from Adam Zamansky, the Magicians pulled out a Northeastern Conference win. Zamansky only scored two points in the first half, but then exploded for 15 points and 12 rebounds in the second half to record the double-double. Sean McCarthy notched 11 points and four steals in his first game of the season after returning from injury, while Dylan Freddo added eight points and 12 rebounds.
“We got a full team effort from all our guys,” said Marblehead coach Mike Giardi.
Marblehead (5-7) hosts Winthrop Friday night (7).
Salem 59, Winthrop 46
Jorge Guerrero had a big game for the Witches with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Luis Paulino scored nine points off the bench. Tommy Beauregard scored eight points in the win.
Salem (7-4) travels to Peabody Friday night (7).
Mystic Valley 72, Tech 55
Julian Peralta (15 points) and Malik Purter (10 points, three steals) were Tech’s top performers in the CAC loss.
Tech (2-9) hopes to turn it around Friday (5:30) when the Tigers host Greater Lowell.
SWIMMING
Classical 98, English 82
The Rams won all but two events to capture the victory Tuesday. Jacob Lang and Daniel Puma were both double-winners for Classical, with Lang taking first in both the 200 individual medley (2:26.13) and the 500 freestyle (5:37.00) and Puma winning the 50 freestyle (27.20) and the 100 breaststroke (1:20.85). Also capturing wins for Classical was Sydney Finnigan in the 200 freestyle (2:23.39), Adam Mariano in the 100 butterfly (1:07.67) and Zachary Westin in the 100 freestyle (1:02.69). The team of Lang, Mariano, Puma and Maxwell Gonzalez won the 200 medley relay (2:45.17), the team of Gonzalez, Puma, Westin and Cristian Flores won the 200 freestyle relay (1:52.19) and the team of Finnigan, Puma, Westin and Lang won the 400 freestyle relay (4:12.94).
The two winners for English were Hannah Trahant in diving (237.15) and Mary Lawlor in the 100 backstroke (1:06.18).
Both Classical (4-4) and English (1-6) will compete in the NEC League Meet this weekend.
Marblehead 95, Gloucester 83
Both the boys and girls 200 freestyle relay teams qualified for states in the victory, with the team of Cole Brooks, Jack Grady, Cooper Caldwell and Theo Chemel taking first with a time of 1:40.71 and the team of Cecilia Robbins, Brooke Wager, Clementine Robins and Anna Coleman placing first with a time of 1:46.51. Libby Rosen took first in diving with a score of 179.90.
Marblehead (7-0) swims against Beverly Thursday (6:30).
