School Sports Roundup: Sanchez leads Tech girls basketball past Minuteman

Behind an 18-point performance from Alondra Sanchez, the Lynn Tech girls basketball team moved back to .500 on the season with a 34-23 win over Minuteman on the road Tuesday evening. 

Iranis Julio added six points in the win for Tech, while Nyari Lane-Benjamin played lights-out defense all game long.

The Tigers (7-7) travel to Shawsheen Wednesday evening (5:30).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

English 62, Gloucester 36

Mashayla Johnson led the way for the Bulldops with 15 points and five rebounds, while Jessica Ruiz also was solid with 14 points and eight rebounds. Matty Larino also hit double figures with 10 points and had five rebounds. English’s next game is at Bishop Fenwick Wednesday night (7).

Fenwick 60, Danvers 31

The Crusaders were led by freshman Morginn Kotchian, who scored 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting. Veronica Tache added 12 points and three steals, while Brynn Bertucci added seven points and four steals.

Fenwick (9-4) will try to grab its tournament-clinching 10th win Wednesday night (7) at home against English.

Marblehead 40, Saugus 38

Leila Walton had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way for Marblehead, while Emily Clough added eight points and 12 rebounds. Maddie Erskine (six points, six rebounds), Fehr Gillet (four points, seven rebounds) and Cat Candelaria (three points, four assists) also played well in the win.

Marblehead (12-2) takes on Peabody Friday (7).

Saugus was led by Jill Ricupero’s 10 points, while Molly Granara scored nine points and Taylor Bogdanski scored six points. Kiley Ronan, Shaylin Groark and Jessica Nazarro all played solid defense in the loss.

The Sachems (10-3) travel to Classical Friday (7).

Beverly 65, Classical 49

Jean Gupton-Morrison led the way for Classical with 22 points, while Amber Crayton notched 17 points. 

The Rams (5-8) host Malden in a non-conference bout Thursday (7).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Peabody 70, Winthrop 37

The Tanners earned the win behind Joangel Lugo, who scored 24 points to pace the offense. Tyler Joyce added 15 points.

Peabody (6-7) hosts Whittier Tech Thursday night (7).

Fenwick 52, Danvers 47

Christian Loescher recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and also hit a clutch 3-pointer down the stretch to help seal the win for Fenwick. Jake Connolly also hit a big shot late for the Crusaders.

Fenwick (9-4) hosts Cathedral Friday (6:30).

Saugus 64, Marblehead 59

Christian Correia put up a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to help lift the Sachems to a win. Joe Lusso added 15 points, while Myles Manalaysay and Mason Nickolas each scored 13 points.

Saugus (5-9) hosts Classical Friday (7).

Sean Grady scored 19 points for Marblehead in the loss. The Magicians (6-7) travel to Peabody Friday night (7).

Tech 58, Essex Tech 48

Mekhi Cronin had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and also had two steals, while Malik Purter had 12 points, five assists and four steals. Julian Peralta had nine points with two 3-pointers. Tech hosts Whittier Friday night (5:30).

KIPP 71, Minuteman 58

The Panthers qualified for the tournament and improved to 10-3. Winfred Sanchez led the team with 16 points, while Ricky Maestre had 14 points.

Lowell 71, St. John’s Prep 41

Luke Poirier led the way in the loss with 11 points, while Matt Duchemin scored eight points.

The Prep (7-6) travels to Catholic Memorial Friday night (7).

Salem 49, Swampscott 32

Bobby Jellison had a huge game with 26 points and seven rebounds, while Tommy Beauregard and Darlin Santiago each scored six points.

Salem (8-5) hosts Salem Academy Friday night (7).

SWIMMING

Commonwealth Athletic Conference Diving Meet

The Lynn Tech swim team took home two first-place finishes in the CAC Diving Meet, winning the conference title in both boys and girls diving. Senior Luis Hernandez won the boys championship with a stellar score of 170.53, while freshman Lee Lewis won the girls championship with a score of 148.20.

“This is the first time in my 44-year tenure that we’ve won both conference championships in diving,” said Tech coach Brad Tilley. 

Tech will host the swimming portion of the CAC Meet Thursday (3).
