Trailing by two points with ten seconds to play, Peabody freshman Taylor Bettencourt’s three-pointer at the buzzer turned defeat into victory for the Tanners girls basketball team in a 48-47 win over Northeastern Conference foe Beverly Friday night.
Emily Carney led Peabody with 14 points and hit four 3-pointers, while Lauryn Mendonca had 11 points. Amber Kiricoples had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Emma Bloom and Georgia Leon played outstanding defense.
Beverly’s Hailey Anderson finished with 36 points and topped the 1,000 point mark.
Peabody (6-10) is back in action Monday against Swampscott (7). The Tanners need to win out to make the state tournament.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lynnfield 55, Triton 38
The Pioneers started flat and led by only two, 20-18 at the half, but they poured it on in the second half to seal the win against the scrappy Vikings. Cate MacDonald had a double-double with10 points,12 rebounds and three blocks, while Grace Klonsky had a solid all-around game with a team-high 12 points, four rebounds and three steals. Tori Morelli had nine points and seven rebounds and Caroline Waisnor had eight points. Riley Hallahan (six points), Ava Buonfiglio (five points, five rebounds) and Melissa Morelli (five points) also scored.
Lynnfield’s next game is Sunday at Manchester-Essex (3).
Fenwick 49, Austin Prep 34
Brynn Bertucci had a huge game for the Crusaders with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while Liz Gonzalez added 10 points and eight rebounds. Veronica Tache had nine points and six rebounds and freshman Bella Romero recorded 13 rebounds.
Fenwick (12-6) hosts Archbishop Williams Monday (6:30).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Beverly 73, Peabody 41
Alex Jean was a bright spot for the Tanners, scoring a team-high 11 points. Joangel Lugo scored seven points, Drew Lucas and Krisli Miraka scored five points each, while Chioke Onwuogu and Brajan Jakic had four points each. Nick Soper (three points) and Alex Rice (two points) also scored.
Peabody (9-9) is back in action Monday at Swampscott (7). The Tanners must win their final two games to qualify for the tournament.
Xaverian 74, St. John’s Prep 60
Rollie Castineyra scored a team-high 21 points in the loss for the Eagles, while Aidan Callahan was right behind with 20 points.
The Prep (7-10) hosts St. John’s (Shrewsbury) Tuesday night (7).
Salem 63, Winthrop 40
The Witches locked up a spot in the upcoming state tournament with the victory. Bobby Jellison was lights-out from distance, hitting 10 3-pointers en route to a 32-point performance. Jorge Guerrero had a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds, while Guillermo Pimentel had a complete game with eight points, six rebounds and seven assists.
Salem (10-6) takes on English Monday (7).
BOYS HOCKEY
Newburyport 5, Lynnfield 2
Sam Pifko and Alex Buonopane scored one goal each in the loss for the Pioneers. Nate Alves, Danny Mack, Pat Barrett and Brenden Henehen notched one assist each. Lynnfield (10-6-2) takes on North Reading Wednesday (5:10) at Kasabuski Arena in Saugus.
