LYNN — The North Shore Navigators have signed two pitchers from the Ivy League for the 2020 Futures Collegiate Baseball League season.
Navs President and General Manager Derek January announced that Dartmouth College freshmen Luke Carpenter and Jack Metzger will join the Navigators this summer.
The signings mark the fifth time in five years Dartmouth College players will play for the Navs.
Carpenter joined the Big Green from Charlotte, N.C., where he was a two-year varsity letterman at Ardrey Kell High School. He helped the Knights post a 27-7 record as a junior and went 7-0 with 52 strikeouts entering the North Carolina 4A State Championship. The 6-foot-1-inch, 185-pound lefthander was his team’s Most Valuable Player and threw two no-hitters in high school.
His MLB scouting report says he will throw important innings out of the bullpen for Dartmouth and will induce a lot of swings and misses.
The 6-foot-4-inch, 195-pound Metzger hails from Powell, Ohio. He finished his career as a senior captain, Division 1 All-State Second Team pitcher and the Central District Player of the Year at Olentangy Liberty High School. Metzger was a two-time all-conference selection who helped the Patriots win 30 games and become Ohio state champions as a junior. He also earned two letters in basketball.
Scouts compare him to former Red Sox pitcher Derek Lowe as a big righthanded pitcher capable of throwing three pitches for strikes from a three-quarter arm slot.
Carpenter and Metzger are teammates with three former Navigators at Dartmouth, including senior captain, 2017 FCBL Pitcher of the Year and Hamilton-Wenham product Austen Michel. In addition, southpaw Trystan Sarcone and outfielder Kade Kretzschmar spent last summer together at Fraser Field after completing their freshman seasons with the Big Green.
The Navs are now preparing for the 13th season of collegiate ball at Fraser Field and their ninth in the Futures League. The Navs are scheduled to open the 2020 season against the Westfield Starfires on Wednesday, May 27. NAVS SEEKING HOST FAMILIES & GAME DAY STAFF
The Navigators are seeking host families, part-time and game day staff members and interns for the 2020 season.
The Navigators’ 2020 roster will have more players from around the country than ever before, so the team is looking to add to their dedicated group of host families.
Host family requirements are simple: a bed, laundry facilities (for personal items only as the team washes uniforms), a parking spot (some players don’t have a car, some do), and some help with meals. The players are provided with food before and after games, so don’t let feeding them be a deal-breaker because the bed is needed most!
Each host family will receive a stipend based on the number of players it hosts, a season ticket for each family member and a special Navs gift package.
The Navigators are also hiring for numerous part-time staff and day-of-game staff positions including the following: assistant general manager; director of interns; game day operations; concessions; clubhouse manager and mascot.
Internship opportunities included the following: event staff, including front gate, merchandise, promotions and special events: game entertainment (music and sound effects); play-by-play broadcaster, sideline reporter and social media.
For more information about becoming a host family or to inquire about open staff positions and internships, contact Derek January at [email protected].
