SAUGUS — A potentially hazardous scene that occurred after a cement truck crashed on Route 1 early Tuesday afternoon was later determined to be safe, according to Fire Chief Michael Newbury.
Saugus police reportedly received a call around 1:58 p.m. about an explosion that resulted from a truck clipping three poles near the area of Essex Landing on Broadway. According to Newbury, three transformers on one of the poles ruptured and began to leak 30 to 40 gallons of oil, which caught on fire as the contents ran down the hill.
The driver of the truck was temporarily trapped by electrical wires but was otherwise unharmed. No other injuries were reported.
Newbury said the private organization Clean Harbors was notified and determined the contents of the transformers to be non-hazardous material. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and other entities were also enlisted to assist with cleanup.
“It was the quick actions of all the public safety employees who arrived on the scene who saved the day. They all did a great job,” Newbury said.
