LYNN — The North Shore Navigators continued adding to the record amount of Division 1 talent on their roster for the upcoming Futures Collegiate Baseball League season, officially announcing the signing of two more pitchers on Monday.
Dayton’s Gavin Bates and William & Mary’s Jack Ryan were introduced as the North Shore club’s newest members. President and General Manager Derek January introduced the two right-handed arms just days after the season began for their respective colleges.
Bates is a 6-foot-3, 225-pound sophomore who appeared in five games out of the bullpen for the Flyers in 2019. The Auburn, Maine, native led the team with a 1.59 ERA and held opponents to a .190 batting average last season as he allowed just four hits and struck out 10 batters over 5.2 innings of work. Bates pitched for the NECBL’s Sanford Mainers last summer and joined the Dayton program after two years at Kents Hill School, where he was also an integral member of the hockey team as a defenseman.
Scouting Report: Big RHP with a low-90’s fastball … late-inning type stuff and makeup … MLB comp: Manny Delcarmen.
The 6-foot, 160-pound Ryan hails from Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., and is set to make his W&M debut this spring after redshirting his freshman season. He was a four-year starter at Briarcliff High School where he captained the baseball and basketball teams. On the diamond, Ryan compiled a 10-2 career record and 1.55 ERA all while earning All-Section honors as a senior, All-State as a junior and All-League as a freshman and sophomore.
Scouting Report: strike-throwing RHP … upper-80’s fastball with outstanding offspeed stuff … excellent athlete … MLB comp: David Robertson.
While Ryan will be the first-ever Navigator from any current Colonial Athletic Association school besides Northeastern, the team has plenty of history with Dayton. Bates has three Flyers teammates who are former Navs: first baseman Alex Brickman (2016-17), pitcher Corey Imbriano (2017-18) and catcher/outfielder Nolan Watson (2019).
The Navs are now preparing for the 13th season of collegiate ball at Fraser Field and their ninth in the Futures League. The 2020 opener is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27. Until then, stay up to date on the latest Navs news by visiting nsnavs.com and following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
