SWAMPSCOTT — A Marblehead Youth Hockey coach has been suspended following his arrest on sexual assault charges earlier this month.
Tyson Dion, 46, of Swampscott, was arrested by the town’s police department and charged with four counts of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or older and one count of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s office.
The charges are not related to Dion’s coaching position, according to DA spokeswoman Carrie Kimball, but further details were not disclosed. A police report filed in Lynn District Court was impounded to protect the victim or victims’ identities, according to a court clerk.
Kevin Kavanagh, executive director of Massachusetts Hockey, which oversees the Marblehead Youth Hockey league, said Dion was suspended from his volunteer coaching position on Tuesday.
“This is something we take seriously,” said Kavanagh. “At this point, a summary suspension is being issued and until the legal proceedings are finalized, we’ll have no further comment. We’ve acted accordingly and we’ll let the legal proceedings take care of themselves and (go) forward from there. We’re always looking to create a safe environment for our players.”
Dion was arraigned in Lynn District Court on Feb. 7 and his bail was set at $5,000. He was ordered to not have contact with anyone under 16 years old, with the exception of his two sons. He’s scheduled to return to court on March 13 for a pretrial hearing, Kimball said.
Attempts to reach Dion were unsuccessful and his attorney, Frank Sanchez declined comment.
It’s unclear how long Dion has been coaching in the league. Two members of Marblehead Youth Hockey’s Board of Directors did not respond to separate requests for comment.
