More fallout for youth hockey coach facing sexual assault charges in Swampscott

SWAMPSCOTT — There’s been more fallout for a Marblehead Youth Hockey coach who was arrested earlier this month on sexual assault charges in Swampscott.

Tyson Dion, 46, of Swampscott, who was suspended from his coaching position on Tuesday, has also been removed from his post on the league’s board of directors, according to a statement emailed to The Item on Thursday.

“Upon learning of the allegations against Tyson Dion, Marblehead Youth Hockey took immediate action to separate him from our organization, including removing him from our board and from his coaching position,” said John Payne, president of Marblehead Youth Hockey.

“We were assured by law enforcement authorities that these charges are in no way connected to his coaching or Marblehead Youth Hockey. The District Attorney’s office has publicly stated the same. Nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of our participants.”

Dion was arrested by the Swampscott Police Department earlier this month and charged with four counts of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or older and one count of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s office.

DA spokeswoman Carrie Kimball said the charges are not related to Dion’s coaching position, but did not disclose further details. A police report filed in Lynn District Court was impounded to protect the victim or victims’ identities, according to a court clerk.

During his Feb. 7 Lynn District Court arraignment, bail was set at $5,000 and Dion was ordered not to have contact with anyone under 16 years old, with the exception of his two sons. He’s scheduled to return to court on March 13 for a pretrial hearing, Kimball said.

Dion’s attorney, Frank Sanchez, has declined comment on the charges.
