The MIAA Division 1A “Super 8” boys hockey bracket was released Thursday night, and the St. John’s Prep hockey team earned a coveted spot among the top teams in the state with the No. 4 seed in the tournament.

The Eagles (11-4-5) had a solid season with one of the more difficult schedules in the state. St. John’s has already earned wins over fellow Super 8 participants Pope Francis (No. 3), Xaverian (No. 5), Catholic Memorial (No. 6) and Framingham (No. 8) this season. The Eagles are also 0-1-1 against BC High, which earned the No. 2 seed.

While dates and times for the Super 8 games won’t be determined until after the two play-in games on Sunday, the Prep is set to face off against rival Xaverian in the opening round. The Eagles are 2-0-0 against Xaverian already this season.

The Spartans would have had an outside shot at a bid for the Division 1A “Super 8” tournament if they had been able to pull out a win at the Cardinal Hockey Classic in Springfield, but St. Mary’s was held scoreless on the day.

St. Mary’s (12-7-2) now awaits its seeding in the Division 1 North tournament.

St. Mary’s had a 1-0 lead after two periods, but a controversial goal from Notre Dame in the third period led to a draw in the season finale.

Zoe Solomons notched the lone goal for the Spartans, while Maggie Pierce and Jenna Chaplain had one assist each.

“Our effort and compete level were significantly better than they have been recently and I thought we played really well,” said St. Mary’s coach Frank Pagliuca. “Unfortunately, we had several opportunities to extend the lead with some quality chances but we weren’t able to finish. But overall, we played very well against a very good team.”

St. Mary’s closes out the season at 14-2-4 and is slated to be a high seed in the upcoming state tournament, meaning a likely bye week for the weary Spartans.

“I think we’re really excited to play in the tournament,” said Pagliuca. “We have been waiting almost a year to get back to this point. We’re going to take some time off to rest physically and mentally, then we’ll get back at it to prepare.”

Tony Palavra led the way for Classical with 26 points, while Jeff Hill Jr. added 12 points in the loss.

The Rams (12-10) now await their seeding in the upcoming state tournament.
