LYNN — A 33-year-old man is dead following a double shooting that occurred on Jones Terrace Monday night, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s office.
Two people were shot on Jones Terrace, a small cul-de-sac off the 300 block of Boston Street, shortly after 6 p.m. The second victim, a 22-year-old man, was taken to Lahey Burlington and is expected to survive, the DA’s office said.
About 20 minutes after shots were fired, one person lay dead and partially covered by a sheet about 50 feet in from Boston Street, while police focused on a house on the small side street.
Following the chaos, a large crowd lined both sides of Boston Street, which was shut down from Barrett Street to New Park Street. At least 10 police cruisers, including State Police cars, and two ambulances were parked near the crime scene. A State Police K9 had been dispatched to the area.
Anthony Martinez, who was at the scene shortly after the shooting, said his father, Oscar, had been parked on New Park Street, about a block away from Jones Terrace, when he heard shots ring out.
Martinez said his father got scared after he heard a “bang, bang” from the gunfire and then saw police rushing to the scene.
Iris Ramos said her mother, Diane, lives at the corner of New Park and Boston streets and heard three gunshots, which was followed by additional shots.
“Gunshots that close to home — I definitely want my mother to move,” Ramos said.
A Boston Street resident, who asked not to be identified, said he was on his way home from work when his mother, who also lives on Boston, called to tell him that she sensed something was wrong outside.
The man said he told his mother not to go near the windows, which prevented her from seeing the gruesome sight he encountered on his drive back home.
After driving onto Jones Terrace, the man said he saw a dead body on the street and someone stumbling onto the stairs of a nearby building.
The man, who has lived on Boston Street for 17 years, said the area had always been quiet, but he noted there had been a change late last spring. A lot of cars with out of town plates have been coming and going and there has been a frequent odor of marijuana.
No arrests have been made and the incident is under investigation by Lynn Police, the DA’s office and the Essex State Police Detective Unit.
